Crashing | Helldivers 2

Hi all,

I am curious and looking if somebody can give me a hint here.

As the title states, I have crashing when playing Helldivers 2. The crash occurs in 3 different variants

  • A. Game crashes to Desktop
  • B. Game goes stucked and after a while freezes the whole PC
  • C. Whole PC just gets stucked

This issue approximately started after the Omens of Tyranny update. Thus I am not here to blame the OS or PC, cause other games don’t cause such issues.

I was able to catch output from dmesg when this issue started. And I would like to understand it like whats going on.

There are two specific log messages that caught my eyes

WARNING: CPU: 7 PID: 4146 at mm/vmalloc.c:503 vmap_small_pages_range_noflush+0x4a0/0x980

Do those messages present a posibile memory leaking?
Does anybody know whats going on?

Please post the output of :
sudo cat /sbin/sysctl vm.max_map_count

And run:
sudo echo 1048576 > /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count

And try the game.

Additionally, if no improvements are made, try the lts kernel by running:
sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers

And reboot.

The first command you asked for will not show readable output as its a binary (I think), But vm.max_map_count can be read as well via sysctl command.

sudo sysctl --system | grep vm.max_map_count
vm.max_map_count = 1048576

Its not running on 65530 it was increased to 1048576 since 2024.04.07-1 which is the new default :slight_smile: and can be found in /usr/lib/sysctl.d/10-arch.conf as the new default for Arch.

I will try LTS, I don’t believe its kernel related as only one game is affected. But you never know. I will report back after I test out the LTS kernel and HD2

Sadly no change with LTS. I can see still the same behavior.

Try a different proton version perhaps ?
Nvidia Open drivers perhaps ?

Have you tried looking in the suggested launch options and the comments in protondb?
I’m not a gamer, so I would have no idea what might be applicable there…

I forgot to mention this, my bad, but I tried all possible tuning in Steam launch options or Guides on Steam & ProtonDB for HD2 to try to fix this before decided to open a topic on the forum :slight_smile:. But nothing helped.

Honestly that’s why as well I am strongly suspecting the latest update of the Game F it up :D. I was just currious why sometimes I see those logs in dmesg when the crashing occurs.

Time for an update…

So as this did still bother me, I gave it some time to review the logs as well my own sanity, and I can say I was able to FIX the problem (at least the portion of the problem on my side).

I today had time so I looked around BIOS and found something is there fishy, run memtest again and from TEST 3 seaaaa of red appeared.

My Memory CAS was wrongly set. Yes you hear correctly I had the CL wrongly set (and timers) which was cause of the logs and game crashing (mostly).

As it looks like building your new PC at 4am in the morning has its drawback. When I did my build in BIOS I by mistake choose CL32 instead of CL36 (which is the default of my RAM).

After correcting the mistake no more errors when running memtest, and no more logs. Additionally to this HD2 is more stable and playable! (yes it still sometimes crashes but that partially the game problem devs constanly fix the causes of crashes).

So the root cause and outcome of this story:
Just go sleep don’t disassemble your PC or server at 4am in the morning after a long work shift xD. And definitely DO NOT attempt any TUNING at that time.
