Contents of Downloads folder missing after update

Basically I ran an update yesterday and noticed my downloads folder is completely empty when I opened it today…

Anyone else have that happen?

I would post an image of the folder being empty but it’s not letting me.

Please, we trust you, there is no need to post pictures from nothing.

In terminal

~

Enter

ls Downloads

btw, updates never change anything on your /home folder.

A fresh install on 2024-12-05, which files do you put in the downloads folder?

I think there is a misunderstanding here.
The download folder has nothing to do with the package manager. It stores things you download from the Internet.
Packages installed with pacman can be found in usr/share.

Um, I understand that, thats why im confused I never deleted anything from the folder and the contents of the folder go missing after an update…

I typed that in the terminal and nothing happens, I downloaded several things, mod files, files from Unreal Engine, copies of proton GE, a few pictures etc, it was a small collection of files I haven’t move elsewhere yet…

I just can’t believe an upd empties the download folder.
Are there any bug reports in arch linux or other forums?

Do you have multiple user accounts?

Just search for .png, .jpg or names you can remember in terminal like

find -iname '*.png'

Again

Maybe you can post here the log from

ls /home/$USER/

While not 100% impossible, I’d say it’s highly improbable that an update cased this.

I’d go through your bash history to see if there’s a possibility that an errant command caused this. Some innocuous seeming commands can have disatrrous results if you don’t fully understand what the command does. I consider myself a fairly competent bash user, and yet I’ve wiped directories when using the find or grep command when piped to another command writing to a destination directory. Luckily it was simply a test directory with nothing of significance in it, but I was surprised with the serious result on one occasion in the past. Unexpected things can happen when you issue a command that you’ve never used before. Copy and paste commands people blindly issue that they found online can potentially have very very serious implications.

You mostly have no worries with any command posted on our forum. Many eyes scan each post on our forum, and someone would certainly give a warning or flag any unsafe command posted here .

Haven’t found any bug reports, don’t have multiple user accounts, I cannot find any logs, ill just chalk this one up as user error as I don’t know what happened and don’t remember deleting anything from that specific folder… no file system errors found either. Snapshots in Btrfs also don’t show anything, went through all the associated folders.
