Computer Freezes When I Try To Play Games

Good Afternoon,

I want to apologize in advance, I am still very new to Linux and CLIs.

I switched from Windows 11 to CachyOS because Baldur’s Gate 3 ran better on Linux than on Windows for me. However, it seemed after every few updates I would run into the same issue. When I would play games or use Stable Diffusion via ComfyUI, my computer would randomly freeze.

Sometimes the freeze would occur when the game is loading, sometimes it would happen randomly during gameplay. I never had this issue on Windows 11, so I assumed it was an issue with CachyOS.

So, I switched to Garuda, and after trying to play Baldur’s Gate 3…I sadly ran into the same issue. Since this is a fresh installation of Garuda, haven’t done anything minus clicking the “Do you want to apply additional performance tweaks? (at the cost of power usage/heat)” in the Garuda Setup Assistant.

I really enjoy Linux a lot and I really hope someone can help me resolve this. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me

All the best,
CasuallyGaruda

Welcome, you could try running in X11 or try a different kernel, maybe the LTS one

Hi and Welcome,

First i would update the mainboard it helped me on some issues

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-TOMAHAWK-MAX/support

Like @cybertheworm sayed testing another Kernel like zver3 for your Kernel. Cachys Kernel is good but i had game trouble too on my zver3 CPU so swapped to znver3 worked better for my games .

sudo pacman -S linux-znver3 linux-znver3-headers

Would also try X11 session

NVIDIA GA106 [GeForce RTX 3060 Lite Hash Rate]

Nvidia dkms is right . Those Lite Hash Rate ones i read many topics here already too.

What says your nvidia -smi output?

Which proton you are use? Did you try to disable Steamoverlay? Is the right Gpu used for the Game ?

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to try and help me out. I switched to the KDE X11 and so far I haven’t had any crashes yet. I am going to install ComfyUI (As soon as I remember how to do it on Linux) and see if that doesn’t crash either. But so far so good!

Oh man, I have never updated a mainboard before lol I’ll try to figure that out when I have some spare time.

So I did switch the kernel and switched to a x11 session. Honestly everything is running a lot more smoothly, stuff is loading faster and I haven’t had a freeze yet.

I just disabled the steam overlay, hopefully that gives me a few extra fps :stuck_out_tongue:

I am using the Proton 10.0-1 (Beta) with the game, not sure how to check if the right GPU is being used, but I only have one GPU

This is what nvidia-smi gives me:

my fault was thinking the 9 series with igpu.

Smi looks good also the readouts.

I use also the 9.0.4 Version runs games good too =)

ps. you can read here settings too for testing behaviours.

https://www.protondb.com/app/1086940

It´s the first thing you should do. Not trying this and that and hoping it would help.

I don’t know why so many people work with versions from the stone age of their BIOS. We are no longer in the 90s or 2000s where every BIOS update made you break out in a sweat. Nothing can really go wrong and if it does, it’s relatively easy to fix.

If you want to get the best out of your hardware, BIOS/UEFI updates are essential. It is often the case that you don’t even notice that a component is only working with the handbrake on because you are used to it. Compatibility with CPU, RAM and other hardware is constantly being adapted. Important security patches are also often included. For me, it is a regular duty to check for new versions and then install them.

Btw… you are 9 versions behind.

And sorry..

You need the nvidia-open-dkms driver. This chip is Ampere family NV 176

Deinstall nvidia-dkms and install the open driver

sudo pacman -R garuda-nvidia-config nvidia-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia libxnvctrl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia gwe python-py3nvml

then pls reboot (my mind), but not a must

sudo pacman -S nvidia-open-dkms egl-wayland lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-settings opencl-nvidia nvidia-utils

Post then your garuda-inxi + pacman -Qs nvidia

Thx. it was late and i clicked on dmks and showed me the ga106 too. =)

im not much in nvidia btw . How is it about nvidia-prime for games ? Is it only for nvidia-dkms or also for nvidia-open-dkms? @gampel

I will take care of this right now

Edit: Updated the BIOS and nothing seems to have broke!

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to try and help. When I tried to deinstall using your command, I got the following.

checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: removing opencl-nvidia breaks dependency 'opencl-driver' required by hcxkeys
:: removing nvidia-utils breaks dependency 'vulkan-driver' required by steam
:: removing lib32-nvidia-utils breaks dependency 'lib32-vulkan-driver' required by steam
:: removing nvidia-utils breaks dependency 'vulkan-driver' required by steam-native-runtime
:: removing lib32-nvidia-utils breaks dependency 'lib32-vulkan-driver' required by steam-native-runtime

That’s for all nvdia gpus. (dgpu)
And it works with all nvidia drivers. It have no dependence.

then use

no reboot and install

sudo pacman -S nvidia-open-dkms egl-wayland lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-settings opencl-nvidia nvidia-utils (pls with all opt. dependence)

Alright, I did it  So far, so good and my computer didn’t explode! (Joking)

Thank you again for taking the time to help me out!

For security reasons, you should install another kernel or to see a difference which kernel is faster (feels faster if you play)

Vermeer (Zen 3) Gen 4

Install znver3, cachyos or lqx kernel (my mind)

Correct.

nvidia-prime is only required by hybrid graphics systems to be able to switch between the iGPU and the dGPU. It is not required for systems with a single GPU (or disabled iGPU).

So something strange happened. Everything was working fine, but when I took some time to use Stable Diffusion ComfyUI to make some Dungeons and Dragons Tokens…after a little while everything froze again. Not only that, but when I restarted my PC, after a couple of minutes it froze again.

Seems to be working find now, but I wish I could figure out what was causing it. Also the app bar thing at the bottom isn’t minimizing anymore either.

Edit: The freeze originally happened on the linux-znver3 kernel, switching to linux-zen right now. linux-lqx wouldn’t install for some reason and the command prompt instantly closes so I can’t see any errors.

Edit 2: I managed to get the error for trying to install linux-lqx. Says it failed to retrieve some files so no packages were upgraded.

Edit 3: I got linux-lqx installed but when I try to restart and use it, I just get a blinking “_” on the top left of my screen. After that first freeze I got, now my computer is freezing much more quickly when I am in games.

Got it working without docker (didn’t see this), but it froze my computer after a while of using it. I had the same issue with CachyOS when I was using it. Games and ComfyUI would cause a freeze.

Oh! I forgot to send you this information.
