Cifs shares no longer mounting

I have some network shares that are supposed to mount on book, and they were working great until recently. I tried to access one yesterday and it was disconnected. When trying to mount the shares I get this:

sudo mount -a
[sudo] password for sam:
bad option: gid="sambashare"
bad option: gid="sambashare"
bad option: gid="sambashare"
bad option: gid="sambashare"

If I try to manually mount one of the shares with the only option being the user I get this:

sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.1/Shows /media/samba/Shows -o user=media
Password for media@//192.168.1.1/Shows:
mount error(22): Invalid argument
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)

When I check dmesg it shows this:

sudo dmesg | tail
[ 4152.498163] CIFS: Attempting to mount \\192.168.1.1\Shows

The other systems on the network can access the shares just fine and if I go to

smb://192.168.1.1/Shows/

in dolphin I can access it.

I tried some snapper images and the mounts worked on the image I had for June 29, but not the next on July 3. Unfortunately I learned that you can only boot into one of the snapper images once, so I wasn't able to do comparisons on what changed.

I was able to create a list of packages that were installed during that time frame by looking at the package cache, unfortunately there is nothing that obviously affects smb.

I've been scouring the internet for the past day and haven't found anything that has helped. Any suggestions on what I can do to get my network shares working again?

Thank you

First thing is to always test an alternate kernel. The LTS kernel is usually the best one to start with unless your hardware is brand spanking new, (test the mainline kernel for the newest hardware).

The glib-networking package would seem the most likely candidate as the culprit.

I'll test with the lts and regular kernels and get back.

Installed the LTS kernel and there was no change, downgraded the glib-networking package to this version /var/cache/pacman/pkg/glib-networking-1:2.72.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst and it still isn't mounting the shares.

It looks like I have a kernel package from 25 Jun, so I think I'll give that a try.

EDIT
Nope still not mounting.

You could try writing Systemd mount & automount units instead of using fstab.

Is this the actual name of a group on your system? (cat /etc/group) I ask because I don’t think this is a default group.

Have you tried swapping out the non-numeric gid for the numeric one?

From man mount.cifs:

gid=arg
sets the gid that will own all files or directories on the mounted filesys‐
tem when the server does not provide ownership information. It may be spec‐
ified as either a groupname or a numeric gid. When not specified, the de‐
fault is gid 0. The mount.cifs helper must be at version 1.10 or higher to
support specifying the gid in non-numeric form. See the section on FILE AND
DIRECTORY OWNERSHIP AND PERMISSIONS below for more information.

From FILE AND DIRECTORY OWNERSHIP AND PERMISSIONS:

If the uid’s and gid’s being used do not match on the client and server, the
forceuid and forcegid options may be helpful. Note however, that there is no cor‐
responding option to override the mode. Permissions assigned to a file when
forceuid or forcegid are in effect may not reflect the the real permissions.

I might be reaching here, but maybe you could try taking out the gid option and give that forcegid option a shot.

This is a known regression in 5.18.9. 5.18.10 is worth trying, and if it’s not fixed then it’s possible to use kernel modules from an earlier kernel (which I’ll detail if 5.18.10 doesn’t work).

Yes, I created the group. I have not tried changing to using the numeric gid.
I hadn’t done to much with the options other than remove them for test a manual mount, since it was working with my setup.

It looks like there is a Nitrous 5.18.10 and a clear 5.18.10 in the repos right now, so I’ll try those.

Installing the 5.18.10 kernel worked.

Thanks
