Timeshift backup: internal vs external storage?

I'm new to using Timeshift and I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should use external storage device for my Timeshift backups. I know that one advantage of storing the Timeshift backups on my computer's internal storage is convenience. And I have a vague idea that maybe it's safer to store it on external device (but I'm not sure exactly why).
