BTRFS bug triggered by Steam download

ok, let’s start this over again because I think I narrowed down the problem:
since yesterday I thought I’d grab a few of my games from Steam and download them to my HDD (not the SSD, this looks important). And there’s this one game that keeps triggering a BTRFS bug. As soon as Steam starts, Outward’s download triggers this one on dmesg:

[ 75.557841] BTRFS error (device sda3): err add delayed dir index item(name: 0461510dec14e428f1a0617198d14239.iws.sse) into the insertion tree of the delayed node(root id: 5, inode id: 480625, errno: -17)

if I try to quit Steam, it’ll try to interrupt the download, with no success. If I tell Steam to exit anyway, it’ll leave a defunct process running, which’ll prevent me from running Steam again.

I thought maybe pausing the download (and then quitting Steam, rebooting, etc) would maybe solve it, but no dice. After the reboot, running Steam again starts with the game’s download and that’ll immediately trigger the bug.

(one more edit)
I thought the BTRFS assistant’s scrub solved it… but nope. Starting the Steam app, the game starts to download, and then after a little while the bug triggers again, and the download dies down.

Goddamn me I always forget about testing kernels. This error seems to only be happening when I do the regular boot with the Zen kernel. I just booted up to LTS and no sign of the error so far.

BUT. I do am having some performance issues with the LTS - to the point where mouse movement is compromised at times.

From timing and comparing to journalctl, it seems to have happened during activation of Snapper and the Daily cleanup… after snapperd deactivated, performance seems to have normalized. Or… not. Watching journalctl, it happens when I get a plasmashell[12278]: ioctl (GFEATURE): Broken pipe message…

(edit)
oh great, it seems like Telegram Desktop dislikes LTS kernel.

never seen this error before using Zen…
