Best Garuda edition for low-end laptop?

Hi,

I’m looking to try Garuda Linux but my laptop isn’t that powerful (older CPU, 4GB RAM, HDD). I saw there are many different editions like KDE, GNOME, XFCE, etc.

I’m wondering which one would run best on lower-end hardware?

Also, does changing the kernel (like using linux-lts instead of linux-zen) help with performance or stability on weaker machines?

Any tips or suggestions are welcome. Just trying to make sure I pick the right edition before installing.

Thanks!

My opinion. cinammon, xfce , i3, sway, hyprland are going to likely run smoothly for you.

Each has its listed least requirements on the download page so have a look. Go cinammon or xfce though, you’ll be surprised

The kernel’s are mostly a hit and miss. For a lot of people zen works great for some it doesn’t. Some prefer the cachyos kernel some prefer lts. The performance gains on these are mostly placebo effects though.

My honest suggestion just have multiple kernel’s its not as if they consume a lot of space. switch between them and see if you like one better. You will sometimes even hit a kernel bug. Like I haven’t been able to boot with the lts kernel for some time now. Some ppl face hibernation issues on certain kernels, etc.

Thanks for the advice bro, now I’m using Garuda Mokka, I quite like it even though it’s not as light as Linux Mint, but it’s more flexible and makes my skills improve especially when there are errors during updates.

I’m using XFCE on a Windows 7 era laptop and it works really good, similar specs to what you have

Is it true that your laptop specs are the same as mine? I have an Intel N4100 with an Intel UHD Graphics 600 GPU.

Worse, I’ll boot it up and post the inxi

I have 2 older laptops and they run fine on XFCE. On KDE and Cinnamon they getting hotter and more integrated GPU usage. I didnt tested mokka or others because the older intel gpu or nvidia works on the install fine without install other drivers manually. Its a Asus and HP laptop from W-Vista/7 time with switched HDD to SSD and Ram upgrade

I would say that both laptops easily run with KDE. I am not on Garuda right now and I have to exchange the external SSDs, but the inxi is almost the same

My wife’s PC has a better GPU, but only i3/3, 4 GB RAM, but classified V3. No problems with KDE here either.

Sorry, I have problems with the correct formatting of the inxi.

I know a bit off topic but…
Just reporting that I’ve tried to fix the formatting of that garuda-inxi, but it made it just a single line. Not exactly sure what the cause of that was as I’ve fixed formatting recently just fine in markdown.
(Also topics show bold text like they aren’t completely read, but I know I’ve read them. not sure if there are some glitches going on or what. :face_with_spiral_eyes:)

Works fine here.
Ah yes, seems a copy paste error from the poster.

Please, only English in the English forum section.

I am a bule from Germany, but my heart beats for Indonesia!

I exclude a copy error.

I posted from CashewOS, so too ./inxi .

By the way, Chaotic Aur is a real asset in Cashew!

Some translations are shi not so good.

So it is not garuda-inxi, but it is a pain to read, I hide it

Thanks for hiding it, it’s really a pain to read.

I discovered a script here in the forum that allows you to use garuda-inxi outside of Garuda.
Unfortunately, I can’t find the script I ran anymore (hopefully the author is reading this), but it works with a period and a slash: ./garuda.inxi
