ASUS X670E-A audio input not working, but output does

Hi everyone,

I am new to Garuda and I reviewed a number of "microphone not working" threads in the forum. However, I have yet to find a possible solution for my issue. I have a new gaming rig with the mainboard mentioned above, which is running a "ASUSTek USB Audio".

It seems that the system is identifying both the output and the input correctly, as they are being shown as loudspeaker / microphone "USB Audio" respectively in the GNOME Sysutils. Output audio is also working flawlessly so far (though I only checked for 2.0. sound - don't have a setup for 7.1 audio here). The problem is that the microphone is not registering any sounds. Neither is there any activity shown in in the "sound bars" in the settings nor any app installed (like Discord) is registering any sound from it.

In case anyone is wondering: The headset (Beyerdynamic MMX300) is connected directly to the jacks of the mainboard. I have tried using the front-panel of the case as well - however that resulted in both audio output and input not working. I have no idea why that is the case either, as the mainboard connector of the front-panel is connected correctly. But getting the front-panel to work is not really a priority for me as long as the microphone starts working...

I have tried switching between pulseaudio and pipewire, however that didn't bring about any change. I have also activated "ALSA Support" however, so far my understanding was, that ALSA is always necessary on Linux systems. So I didn't really understand why I could select (or deselect) it in the Garuda settings. But then again, I am maybe not proficient enough in Linux for that (having used Ubuntu so far for the past ~10 years).

Does anyone have an idea on how to approach this issue? I invested ~3 hours so far googling and stuff and didn't find a solution yet.

Thank you everyone in advance!
dapari

Addition: I also booted my old Ubuntu 22.04 LTS installation to test it there as well. Same issue persists.

Addition2: When any system sounds occur, "USB Audio Microphone" records that if it is selected. It does not actually pick up the input from the connected microphone.

Anyone? At least some tipps how to continue or where to turn?

Too bad no one could help yet, I have no experience with this, unfortunately.

If the problem also occurs with another OS, it could also be a hardware problem.
If you haven't tried other kernels yet that would be worth a try.

Does the manufacturer not have support/forum?

I also have headphone plugs here that do not fit properly (jack). I must then meet the right point with a lot of feeling by turning and pure out. And that's just for listening. Not only on an extension cable, but also on a laptop, but on other devices it works without issues. It is crazy.

Thanks for the reply. It being new hardware I actually thought of that and temporarily got a Windows11 installation to work on it. It confirmed that the hardware is A OKAY as everything worked as intended. So my lay man's guess is, that it might actually be an issue with the ALSA hardware driver for the ASUStek USB Audio devices (as it occured both in PulseAudio under Ubuntu/POP_OS as well as under Pipewire with Garuda/Arch). But if the ALSA mailing list is still alive, either no body was able to help or everyone is dead
