Now ideally the arduino should have come up as /dev/ttyACM0
but in my case it is not. It worked for me in my ubuntu previously so I know hardware is not the issue.

I saw online solutions referring to usergroups and other permission issues but I doubt my case is even related to that. Output of lsusb says that a device is present as well:
