[Appreciation] And thus I complete my 1st year with linux!

THIS IS GONNA BE HUGE SO BARE WITH ME PLEASE!
I won’t say exactly one year as I joined the Forum quite late, but say 1 year, 2 months maybe. It was in August or September '23 that I decided to finally hop to linux and daily drive it. I first installed Ubuntu MATE on my moms old Lenovo which had a malware ridden Win 10.

At that time I was obviously afraid of the terminal. Even though I knew the ‘apt’ command from reading all the XDA threads during my Custom Android Rom days, I prayed I never get to try it and I didn’t. I don’t even remember opening the terminal ONCE!! I was quite comfy there, because except that laptops hinge/display issues, I had faced absolutely no problems! I didn’t even know Garuda Linux existed back then but I knew the name “Arch”.

I still can’t believe that had I not accidentally came across Garuda, I may have never been here!!

So one day I was just trying out this project and it didn’t install. I was kinda afraid as I had never faced any installation errors before in my life. Also the laptop hinge/display gave up on me at the exact same time so I had a brick basically. Days went by and I had no laptop to use. One day I came across this video where an Indian guy was reviewing Garuda. So I just didn’t think and made a bootable usb using my phone. Some days later I ordered the HDMI cable, connected to TV and installed Garuda. And then never looked back!

Needless to say I learned basic terminal commands because Garuda kinda pushes you to use the terminal for installing apps, updates, etc. Learned many things by experimenting on Garuda linux. Met this awesome, helpful community and just enjoyed the computing experience. Every day I came across something new.

I am mostly writing this to convey my appreciation for this project. This is my small part as a Garuda user as I cannot donate, and nor am I a PRO to help people and solve their issues. I may be using linux at a great time, when companies like Valve are helping make Linux gaming better everyday, linux marketshare is rising greatly, Win getting shittier everyday so more users are atleast considering moving away lol.

I would just say 1 year in and more to come! Also I would like to thank y’all for helping me whenever I nedded it!

WARNING!

Your appreciation and enjoyment of Linux will continue to increase directly proportional to your use and exploration of its utilities, applications and functions.

And don’t stick with just ‘XYZ Linux’'. I encourage you to explore other distributions, as well. Only by doing so can you continue to learn and grasp Linux’s abilities and potential.

I am 72 years old and have been using Linux in various flavors for 25+ years. I feel it helps me to keep mentally active. I never get tired of it.

Rock on, @IUSELINUX!

Yeah, maybe because when a noob wants to install linux, he’ll go through various “best distros” articles and there atleast one Ubuntu flavour exists!

YES! I am really keen on trying out Debian, Fedora and likes. Its just that I’ve been putting it off a lot. I did give Nix a try but I didn’t really like it.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. Good to hear you’re enjoying yourself.

I’m not a pro by any means either, but as long as you keep on experimenting, one day you’ll be able to solve at least some of those issues.

Pretty similar to how I started except with vanilla Ubuntu.

Today I am confident in using terminal , setting up bootloader , modifying efi variables, packages , experiments and what not . Not trying to be arrogant, I am still a newborn in the wahlt of Linux and I will only learn more and more .

Rn I am thinking to learn bash and zsh scripting.

Ironic it is who I am today , in 2020 when I got my first decent computer , an HP AIO enough for my gaming needs and stuff for now , Half Life ! I was so scared that I would start crying when my game would get stuck on loading screens , when Steam took more than 3 minutes to install , I would panic das mein computer is bricked.

I am not too knowledgeable and often have to refer to wiki for the basic of stuff , but I am absolutely certain that I will give back to this community and Linux in one way or other. Moreover, if I succeed in opening an Arms-manufacturing enterprise after college , then I will be sure that my enterprise will donate a set amount of money and our budget to Linux and FOSS projects like Gnome and KDE(too hypothetical but I hope it happens)

This community has done a lot for me and the one who really put me on the track and cured my paranoia was @Bro , he did a lot , explained to me a lot and taught me a lot. He is also a very key reason for my new self which exists today.
I am damn sure everyone knows how much a help kvetcher I was at first , idk about now, especially @filo @dr460nf1r3 when I messaged them both individually, pretty embarrassing.

I am still a rookie and try to help others to my ability but every day , I learn more and more about Linux, I will keep learning until I draw my last breath.

“You fear what you do not understand.” If you try to understand something that you fear , then that fear will disappear, leaving knowledge in its demise. (Don’t try this on your mom when she is angry and holding up a slipper or else it will be your demise :skull:)

Congrats! started with Ubuntu and distro hopped for a while. Last distro I used was Kubuntu 22.04 with AV Linux on an older laptop. It was time to upgrade to 24.04 so I backed it up and decided to see what was out there. I wanted KDE and since I develop games with Unity and use MIDI, I wanted a distro to be able to handle those tasks. Here I am

Congrats! I was using various linux distros on my side kick laptop for years… but on my main PC it was always Windows…

I switched from Windows on:

Garuda (2.6.26-1):
System install date: 2023-12-08

and I am more or less happy
