I ran into a glitch that I have spent the last 6 hrs trying to solve.
The problem:
My Stealth Ultra controller was working perfectly the first 2 times I played Helldivers II. I exited the game and a few hours later relaunched it to play it again.
But This time the “A” button does not work in the game. ALL the other buttons work fine.
If I back out of the game window and go into the Steam console, then go to settings, then controller. The stealth Ultra is listed as the controller.
Then when i go into the test input device screen, The “A” button IS working in steam. Even when the game is open and running on my big screen at the same time.
I was not able to get the controller to work with the 2.4Ghz usb dongle or usb cable. For some reason when I connected it that way it will not connect and just turns off after 1 minute.
But when I connect it with the bluetooth mode with no dongle. It is recognized in System Settings in bluetooth as:
Joypad , Address FF:37:E3:60:7A:43 , name as Stealth Ultra and it is connected.
I can also go into Game Controllers in system settings and it shows up in there as:
“Stealth Ultra (/dev/input/event22)” and ALL the buttons, including the “A” work in the test boxes. “A” triggers the number 1 button.
My steps so far to fix this issue:
Shut down everything and rebooted…
Deleted the controller out of bluetooth devices, removed it from Steam, closed and rebooted again. Then reconnected the controller in bluetooth.
Same issue exists.
Then I searched steam forums for some answers.
then I searched this forum.
then i searched arch wiki
then I read the arch wiki gamepad .
And the last thing I tried was I used snapper to restore to the last change BEFORE i installed HelldiversII.
And I am still at a loss.

Another Update:
just tried a different game. The “A” button works in that game.
So it is definately a Helldivers II issue.
Any help on how to fix it?
Ihave not yet figured out the best way to uninstall and reinstall programs yet.
so if someone could point me to a map. I will buy ya a beer.
hell I’ll buy ya a whole 12 pack!

Sorry Guys, Accidentally posted that before finishing, going to edit it and finish it.

OK I think I got everything in there…
I’m new at this so please give me a little slack.

I am currently downloading another game to see if I have the same issue in a different game.

I have an update I just noticed.
When I click on Helldivers II, Steam Runtime comes up on the task bar on the bottom of the screen. Then It goes off, Then Steam Native comes up. Them steam loads , then Helldivers II loads. then I have to use the mouse to get into the game and then everything except the “A” button works.
The same exact thing happens if I launch Steam Runtime from the apps

So what I need assistance with is how do I trace down the glitch?

is your A button working? https://gamepadtester.net/

Have you tried different Proton versions?
Steam → Settings → Compatibility
I am personally using Proton-GE that I easily installed via Garuda Gamer app (Gamer → WINE → proton-ge-custom).

Steam has also Controller category in the Settings - check in there and test.

It works all the way in the system and other games Until I get into Helldivers II. Then It quits.
I even uninstalled and reinstalled Helldivers II, no change.
Pisses me off because the first 2 times I played the game It worked fine.

you mean this?

I’ll give that a shot. Thanks
it will have to wait for a bit,
Right now I’m dealing with my second monitor quit working after an Update.

OK , I seem to have found the fix for the “A” button not working in Helldivers II.

I went into the Helldivers II Properties, in Steam. Then In the controllers menu I disable “steam input”. Wahlaaah.

But then opened up a new issue. The lag is so bad on bluetooth it makes the controller useless.
Well… Back to the drawing board and the windBlows xbox one controller for now.
I’ll re-visit getting this damn Stealth Ultra controller working in Linux at a later date.
Thanks to those who pitched in.
