When SMART devices fail you

So I got this notice on Telegram just about 2 hours ago…

Some users of ‘Smart Fridges’ were locked out with Microsoft’s global IT outage.

This is actually the whole point of SMART things - they can remotely switch them off!

So, clearly the solution to this problem is Garuda should be running your fridge instead of Microsoft. There could not be any better solution to this issue?

Anyone with me on this?

garuda-inxi for the win

How does the error prevent the user from opening the door in the first place? Like it put a lock on the door?

Smart toilet lids would be really interesting in this context…

Ppl ripping their toilet seats off under pressure would be an amusing meme for a while.

Can’t for such memes

. . . that no one anywhere, for any reason needs a smart fridge.

And if you’re dumb enough to have one, then you deserve the consequences.

Well true…but…I would really like to try out Linux on that appliance

Smart appliances are a huge gaping security hole. While I do have an older smart TV (can you even buy a dumb one now) I will not enable WiFi access on any TV I own. TV manufacturers are basically the worst for fixing security problems with the OS installed on their devices. I will never purchase a TV or any other home device outfitted with an internal microphone or camera. You may as well consider everything you say as being spied upon if you place devices connected to Alexa throughout your home.

Maybe the Facebook generation enjoys having every detail of their lives an open book for the entire world to see, but not me. People that were born before the internet arrived still believe in the outdated concept of privacy. I do not use video calls and never will, sorry but I’m rather particular about having my face and home up on display for the world to view. I know I must be considered a cave dweller for not embracing such intrusive technologies, but with me, my home is where I draw the line for constant observation.

Almost impossible anymore on anything not a computer monitor.

Oddly enough I actually agree with you. I have never been on anything social media wise unless you include, Telegram, Element, Signal, IRC and maybe from time to time the iMessenger app on Mac systems. If you can see it, so can the RCMP, CSIS, and the CF and God know what else is out there.

I just find it amusing about these smart devices being installed. Yes they are a problem but I would really like to try embedding Linux in these devices just to see the outcome for pure curiosity sake

I’ve taken to buying my TV’s used. Not only much cheaper, but none of that garbage installed that way.

I just use my engineering skills to carefully open the appliance and de solder the cameras and microphones. After placing it all back together, once it looks professionally done, its easier to return if it’s still on warrenty

They tried to install smart locks on my apartment.

-You’ll need to download an app.

-I can’t get the app

-sure you can, do you have Google or apple?

-neither

Pause

-show them phone(graphene)

-um, well we can send you an email

-i don’t get emails on my phone either. It’s a security precaution, I only access email on my computer

-we can send you a text.

-the number you have is my home phone and I can’t give you this as it’s my work number.

** Please sign for a key, you are a big exception**

Thanks :+1:

You see, this alone is an issue that drives me mad. I can’t get my bank access or university access to quit with the sending confirmation text ID numbers that I have to confirm in my web browser. I’m trying to get rid of my cell phone all together not carry one with me. If I need a phone, I can consider using an Garman Inreach to send a text message or use my HAM radio license to access a repeater. Using this for university access is the most annoying.

So, I’m at the University of Manitoba, and these people use Micro$haft services like Outlook 365 and what ever they have going on there to log into your schooling stuff that requires Microsoft to send you a confirmation text to log in. I have been fighting with these IT people to get that off my account “for my safety”. I don’t need there safety, your aloud to have a maximum of 30 characters for a login password, KeePassXC is all that I need to keep my university stuff safe and secure. I got Owl for Thunderbird so I can access my stuff from there. I don’t need Microsoft for anything other then to run a VM once in awhile to work a TI calculator from time to time.

These people have really gone over board with me when not to long ago they posted this link Manitoba farm paves way for AI in agriculture … Yup that’s what I want, more technology to get in the way of my life, what could go wrong with AI and farming? There is no way to screw this up, right?

Meanwhile, this summer, I used my time to grow a garden and learn how to ride a horse. Working towards the skills of using a plow the 1800’s no technology way

I heard that they are trying to inject ads into HDMI now.

How is that possible?

I watched This video from Louis Rossmann

Wooooooow…I wonder what would happen if I just used a DVI port rather then an HDMI? Also, if they can inject data into the port, I wonder if they can get data off the port as well

Would you look at the time. Is it 2505 already?
