War Thunder crashs "Out of memory" - Nvidia GTX 1050 2gb

Games crashing “Out of memory”
It’s a recurring problem: games close with an ‘out of memory’ error. I confirmed that it indeed happens when the video card’s memory limit (Nvidia GTX 1050 2GB) is reached, but the curious thing is that this doesn’t happen on Windows. In that case, the game just slows down but doesn’t close on its own. This also happened to me on Fedora, not just on Garuda, so perhaps the solution could work for both, or maybe it’s an Nvidia issue on Linux. I’ll let you decide.

Note: I am currently using dual GPUs, iGPU (Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 630) and dGPU (Nvidia GTX 1050 2GB).

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Let me know what you need or how to obtain a log, and I’ll provide it.

Is the game using the 1050? an not the igpu? since you have 16gigs of system ram the only thing I can think of is when its loading the shaders its hitting your vram limit. Maybe skip the shader caching. But I’m just guessing here.

Yes, the 1050 is being used for the game (War Thunder), absolutely sure. How does ‘skipping the cache storage’ work?
In my opinion, it’s an issue with Nvidia and its drivers on Linux because when I run the game with the iGPU, surprisingly, it doesn’t crash. It runs very slowly, but it works… I even get a message from the game warning me to lower the settings for a better experience, but the game doesn’t crash with the iGPU.

I’ll share a screenshot of what happens when I start it with the iGPU:
Imgur

hmm I’m not expecting a change but maybe try wayland. You can swap from the login menu should be a toggle in the bottom left. But yea the drivers might be the case as it usually is.

I’ve tried that before, and it didn’t change anything either. Thanks anyway.

I’m not a gamer, but you should be able to enable/disable shader caching in the settings of the game launcher (steam, heroic, etc.).
There should also be an option to switch from Vulkan to the DirectX API.

Your nvidia driver doesnt seem to be loading correctly

Issue this command: systemctl restart nvidia-powerd.service and see if it restarts without error and then try running a game again.

Also according to the inxi, you are using xwayland which is Wayland but passing through X11 for legacy support, this can cause issues for some programs. You can try logging in using the legacy pure X11 session.

Also, what wrapper are you using for the game?

Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/nvidia-powerd.service; disabled; preset: disabled)

systemd[1]: nvidia-powerd.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
systemd[1]: nvidia-powerd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.

I wouldn’t give this much importance; it must be caused by being in a hybrid configuration with the iGPU as the primary one. The issue of the game crashing when running out of VRAM happened to me with all configurations and also on Fedora.

I’ve been researching, and the problem seems to be with the GPU memory paging when the VRAM is exhausted. In my case, the issue seems to be that it’s not using the RAM when the VRAM runs out.

None, I use the native War Thunder launcher.

pls make a bios update…
i know …that might not solve your problem but still important.
test then with
vulkaninfo | less
eglgears_x11
all fine ?
yes → start the game and then ?
also
change to a lower resolution inside the game

no … reinstall nvidia-utils + lib32-nvidia-utils (pls do this with pacman)

pls read

Haha! You want my PC to become unusable! Well, I’ll gather the courage, and if I can, I’ll update the BIOS. It’s a risky move.
Thanks, if I do it, I’ll let you know how it went.

sorry
i mean currently you can’t use shared memory with discrete GPUs, only integrated GPUs. (linux) … with M$ winstupid upps windows…it´s possible.
Perhaps you spend money for new gpu (if it´s possible)
i found this also

Not really risky. We have 2024 not 1990

PS: I’m going to try the following steps mentioned in the Arch Wiki to see how it goes.
thxs!

grats :upside_down_face:

Try a different kernel. Preferably the vanilla linux one. May improve things a bit.

I’ve tried before and it didn’t work either.
Thanks anyway.
