System freezes at random for a few weeks now

Hi,

I'm facing random system freezes for a few weeks know. Hoped it would resolve after a round of updates but it didn't after 3 or 4 kernel patch updates, nvidia driver patch updates and so on. So now I'm getting a bit lost what to do.

The freezes happen pretty much randomly. While gaming, working, internet browsing. Sometimes after 5min of uptime, other times after 7 hours. I cannot make out any pattern tbh.
The system runs find and stable on Windows booted from a separate hard drive, so I assume my hardware is ok.

I tried to use different Kernels. The LTS and Mainline one but my system won't boot with them. It always get's stuck (but not unresponsive to ctrl+alt+del).

Other than that, at around the same time, it started to happen that the background on my main monitor won't load and the context menu would not appear when right clicking. Not sure if that is even related but I wanted to mention, just in case. For context. I have a three monitor setup and this only happens on the primary one.

What can I do or provide to get closer to a solution for this?

Test the linux and linux-hardened kernels as well.

Is your bios up to date?

Check that all ram and cables are seated properly.

Perform a btrfs balance.

I have also found flaky pre-failure hard drives to be a cause of lockups in the past. Even though a drive passes testing it can still cause problems. Disconnect any attached drives except your boot drive.

I tired linux already. Won't boot. Simply gets stuck and won't continue like the other alternative kernels. No idea what to do in that case tbh.

Windows runs fine for multiple days now. Drive is nvme so there is no cable and it's securely screwed in.

Already tried btrfs balance as suggested in a similar thread. Ran through find, but didn't change anything.

I've updated my bios now and will see how it goes and report back in a few days.

Sadly the bios update didn't solve the issue. I just experienced a system freeze again.
Are there any other steps to do switch kernels other than installing the kernel in the managment UI and choosing it in grub?

Try linux-next-git to see if it will boot properly for you. It seems very strange that other developmental kernels will not boot on your modern hardware.

I would try searching on the web for recent freezing issues with Ryzen 9 computers.

I would also disconnect all but your main monitor and all peripherals like USB hubs, USB Hard drives, printers, web cams, etc etc as a test to see if the freezes still occur.

Also be sure to run the full ram test just to be sure RAM is not an issue. BTW, just because some hardware works without major issues on Windows does not guarantee that the issue is not related to your hardware. Linux can react very differently with subpar hardware than Windows at times.
