The problem
I had the issue that spotify desktop (package: aur/spotify) would mute itself whenever the volume was changed.
The solution
reinstalling the client using pacman -S spotify fixed the issue, all configuration (even login) and downloads are preserved. Spotify must be fully closed for this to work.
