Since the Linux update from 14th of april (or maybe one or two days before), Linux Zen will hang when booting

This issue is solved in garuda-dracut-support version 1.1.0-1. Previous snapshot boots are unfortunately still affected.

To summarize: When booting a snapshot using Linux 6.8.0 or higher with a garuda-dracut-support version below 1.1.0, your “/home” subvolume is mounted as read only. This changes nothing about the ability to restore snapshots or similar, given that the CLI version of snapper-tools is still available. All future snapshots made after this package is installed should be totally fine, however!

I updated the system and but updating the garuda-dracut-support has no effect. It’s still the same problem as two weeks ago. The start job will hang because it will not find the disk-UUID “bbfad…”. I also can’t find it by myself after booting successfully without the Dracut update. Updating Dracut together with everything else will turn my computer to unbootable state, only older LTS and hardened non-fallback images will load.

And I tried it the way Bluish Humility did. I switched into a TTY (ALT+CTRL+F3) and tried to start the plasma display manager via command but it was unable to start any display server at all. It says “no QT platform plugin could be initialized” and another plasma session command says something like $DISPLAY variable not set.

Please send the content of /etc/fstab here

Same issue here, I am having to rollback to updates from 4/23 whatever updates came after totally hose my system to the point of having to uefi boot to restore from those snapshots prior. The latest one required even an entire cmos reset, normally I wait a few days and this is handled but I guess I just dont update for the time being until I decide on a replacement os. Shame I’ve been most impressed with garuda gaming so far.

Can you please explain this more clearly? Why do you need to do a CMOS reset?

Yeah, with Garuda’s cat, it comes in beautiful colours.

I added the last entry with mount I think. My /games partition is never mounted these days. At the moment, I am writing on my final thesis and I have no time.

I can relate to you. Garuda Linux is amazing with everything, gaming actually works (seeing compatibility breakage with the recent update to KDE6), with the huge exception of software updating being the worst experience I ever made. Windows nerved me out with forced updates, leaving the computer inoperable for up to half an hour, wasting electricity. Ubuntu’s snap applications update silently without any consent and with no user control and system updates are rare and old. But with Garuda, I try to fix update problems for hours.

Lengthy digression about Garuda Update problems

Since today, any update (no matter which package) enforces the installation of another package which conflicts with an intel driver that I had to install myself to make audio recording work. It cannot be removed as it would break dependencies. I cannot use Discord because it forces users to update but nothing can be updated now. But I would really like to know if today’s Linux Zen update finally fixes the Linux-Zen-related snapshot problems.

In the past, Garuda Updates regularly destroyed the ability to boot my system. I need to run a custom script before updates to check for storage requirements and delete snapshots or otherwise delete the pacman cache to save me from crashing big bang updates with Pacman. I have learnt to hate Pacman, it’s awful, almost as awful as the registration to their Gitlab that I was not able to complete after 3 attempts. I have lost days of working on my master thesis due to these update problems. I wouldn’t have lost 3 to 4 weeks of working time when I would have simply used Windows instead of Unix-Like system.

I still continue using Garuda Linux because my configured Plasma Desktop Environment is better usable, Software is easier to install and develop than on Windows (except when some VSCode language extensions simply don’t work). (And because I donate for the servers  )

2 posts were split to a new topic: Unable to boot into the default kernel

Please attempt to remove the swap partition from your /etc/fstab (the line starting with UUID=a685fe8e-5bfb-4a59-b37e-f3c57d9b19a2 swap for now by adding a # in front.

Like this # UUID=a685fe8e-5bfb-4a59-b37e-f3c57d9b19a2 swap [...]

Then apply a system update and run the following commands (note: some of these commands may or may not be run automatically by garuda-update depending on how up to date your system is):

sudo dracut-rebuild; sudo update-grub

, and then attempt to reboot once again. Share any and all output in as much detail as possible.

I can personally only say the opposite, updates have been flawless for me.

I am afraid we have yet to find a team member that has psychic abilities (we are looking for one!), so for now you will have to post the full logs of garuda-update here until we are able to find someone to help us with that

That seems like an exaggeration. If you do experience issues with updating, especially ones that may affect a large number of users, please post here so it can be added to our automation.

Sorry for my bad communication skills, I should have posted the update response instead of complaining. (Did I also mention, that I like that the Garuda Team is patient and helpful? Amazing.)

I did, what you told me. On garuda-update I am stuck:

I don’t know how to disable the automatic onevpl-intel-gpu replacement. Since my last post, I could not update a package. (But I agree, the vpl-gpu-rt package looks like a good choice.)

I tried sudo pacman -R --nodeps intel-media-stack-bin, which is denied. Do I need to install another version of ffmpeg? It’s working flawlessly on your device.
Wait, should I manipulate the build file for ffmpeg to include the new dependency and remove onevpl? Hm, wondering, if this is actually my fault :grimacing:

Note, my Notebook uses an Intel Tiger Lake i5.

PS: Ah, I once set Linux-Zen as the default. I am booting into Linux-Zen. And I only get this update problem with Linux-Zen. WIth Linux-LTS, I can just update. I wonder, if this can create the boot conflict mentioned few posts ago.

Now, I attempt to reboot.

Nothing changed. Same behaviour as before. But I guess, your tip about the Swap partition could be golden. I remember, last year, I wanted to enlarge my root partition. I used KDEPartitionManager to remove the swap partition first. Then I created it in front of the root partition and resized the root partition. It did not work smoothly (and I uninstalled the KDEPartitionManager subsequently). I had to manually adapt /etc/fstab and also manually resize the btrfs root partition in the command line (apparently KDEPartitionManager did not work well with BTRFS).

Could it be, there is a remnant of the old swap partition? I don’t know how exactly it works or where to look. The UUID cannot be found under /dev/disk/by-uuid/ at least.

Oh guys, look what line I found in /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='quiet quiet rd.udev.log_priority=3 vt.global_cursor_default=0 resume=UUID=bbfad61d-c762-4f28-a49c-e041bde44e28 loglevel=3' # Modified by garuda-migrations: splash

How is this actually supposed to boot? It works with the old Dracut. But that resumed UUID doesn’t exist on my system. I gonna remove that UUID and test again.

Finally, this issue is solved. The solution is the one from this Endeavour OS forum thread.

Indeed, for some unkonwn reason, there was a wrong UUID in the kernel command line args in the /etc/default/grub configuration. It was the reason why I couldn’t boot with the new dracut package and couldn’t boot other fallback snapshot images. I can’t remember having put that UUID by myself. The other Linux-Zen issue was already fixed by you guys some days ago.

In order to update and test it, I needed to replace intel-media-stack-bin with libvpl and needed to remove virtualbox-meta (because it still has the old Virtualbox Oracle Extension as dependency, conflicting with the new Virtualbox update). This fixed the update conflicts.

Note: I wrote a forum post some time ago that I replaced libvpl because libvpl did not work with my Tigerlake CPU. I hope, it is fixed with vpl-gpu-rt.

Big Thank You for the time you invest in helping us Garuda Team!

It took me until the end of my work week but I finally went to gigabyte and got the latest bios update from 3 weeks ago and all the updates went through like butter. Glad I gave it a moment to breathe and even happier to know how to use snapper and other tools to keep me runnin between problems.
cheers , thanks again team it’s one of the best distro’s when it works.!!!

So when are we installing llm support bots? lol
