Five different recycle bins: Microsoft introduces waste separation for files
Redmond (Archive) - Windows is finally going green: According to Microsoft, an update for Windows 10, available from today, brings waste separation to home PCs for the first time. Environmentalists have been criticizing for years that all files on computers have ended up in the same trash can, regardless of their format.
Instead of the well-known recycle bin, five different colored bins can now be seen on the desktop after the update - one each for photos, videos, music files, text documents and residual waste. Users are encouraged to dispose of their data in a sustainable manner.
Files with the following extensions belong in the photo bin, for example: .jpg, .png, .psd, .tiff, .gif, .bmp, .svg
The following are in the trash: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt, .xls, .xlsx
Files with the following extensions belong in the old video garbage: .wmv, .mp4, .avi, .mkv, .flv
Land in the music bin: .wma, .mp3, .wav, .flac, .alac, .m4a,.
Most of the other files end up in the trash.
When the trash can is emptied, the discarded files are not simply deleted, but recycled if possible. The color from old photos is used, for example, to fill the paint bucket in Microsoft Paint in a resource-saving way. Old Word documents, in turn, are processed into new, somewhat grayer Word documents.
However, some particularly toxic and non-recyclable files such as computer viruses, GILF porn videos or Helene Fischer songs can no longer be disposed of directly on the desktop, but have to be transferred to a USB stick and then sent to Microsoft by post for hazardous waste disposal become.
