Hello everyone, hope you all are well.

My issue is most of the time when shutting down my PC, either from the shutdown command or the gui shutdown button, my PC gets stuck on the text screen (not sure what the screen is called but it shows unmounting drives, etc) and power never turns off.

I have tried:

  • updating the OS -- i do this every few days anyway
  • updating my bios to the latest release

I'm not sure which log shows the shutdown process but just from watching I don't see anything that sticks out immediately.

You may try with journalctl -b -1 -n100 after a failed shutdown to see the last 100 (-n100, adjust as necessary) journal messages from the last boot (-b -1) -- or -b -1 -r to see them all in reverse order.
Not everything is logged there, as after a certain point in the shutdown there's nowhere to write anything, but hopefully there will be some indication of failure.
If possible, also try to read and post here the last messages on the text screen ("console"), and this is a case where a picture of the screen won't be frowned upon as long as it's readable.
I'm trying to find something online that rings a bell, so far I only found old issues that shouldn't be relevant anymore.
If you noticed some pattern to the "most of the time", that may (or may not) hint at the cause (a silly example: it only hangs when some peripheral is connected).
Another troubleshooting step, is trying some other kernel.

I'm thinking this could be a problem with the motherboard ACPI implementation, and perhaps there is a kernel parameter that can work around it. Gotta read some more.

thanks so much for the reply. Here’s the return of the journalctl command:

I have not noticed a pattern to this behavior, it has been after updates, not after updates, etc.

I’ll take a pic of the console and post back here

I'm no expert but the journal looks OK to me. Yes, let's see what's printed on the console.

just for reference, here is a journalctl after a successful shutdown. I've just tested it several times and, go figure, it has worked fine  I'm going to keep trying to replicate this though since it really bugs me...

Hmm. Which window manager do you use?

I remember having a similiar issue with KDE.

Inxi says it's KDE, indeed I found several reports (though somewhat old). Was that intermittent too?

Yes I'm using KDE

Hmm. I think those cases were somewhat related to either a KDE+wayland-combination or SDDM failing to shut down correctly. When I had it, it could be that it didn't happen for days only to suddenly return. Quite annoying and I think I actually took the ugly solution and made a backup and reinstalled back then...

Ok i replicated the problem. during the time between my previous shut down and this one, I:

-checked this forum, a couple other sites, gmail, etc
-played a game on steam
-watched a video on youtube

Sorry for the quality and format, my screen is ultrawide and the shutdown console doesn't seem to like that

To my knowledge the bottom most thing you see is the kernel output, which means systemd has already stopped at that point. You could try a different kernel.

thanks, ill swap to zen and see how it acts

Still testing here, haven't had too much time in the past few days

Hello, sorry for the delay. I am still having the same issue after swapping to the Zen kernel and trying it out for a few days.

Here is the journalctl post from the last freeze:

Issue is still happening after updates, etc

That's kind of funny, since you don't have any quiet kernel parameters and Plymouth is obviously not actually working (since you are seeing the terminal output).

What happens if you remove the splash kernel parameter?

Or, you could try removing Plymouth altogether:

sudo pacman -Rsu plymouth-git
