Newbie with broken kwin shortcuts

Hello,

I have a brand new install of Garuda Dragonized, and kwin shortcuts are not working. I am a complete newbie to linux systems and may need a little hand holding and do apologize if that is the case.

So far I have tried different methods of getting them to work as suggested by the internet when Plasma 6 broke it last year from what I can tell. I made sure to reset all shortcuts back to default, and then performed a restart. These did not solve my issue. Unfortunately I am out of my depth and request assistance.

Respectfully,
Aureus

Hi,

You seem to be missing the last part of the garuda-inxi which tells you when was the last system update. So I will ask - have you updated the system after the fresh install?

Yes about 3 hours ago. I used the following command.

sudo -Syu

Welcome to the forum

Please use

garuda-update

in the terminal
Also provide your full garuda-inxi

I was sure that was my full inxi minus PII, such as mac and IP. I previously ran the following command.

inxi -Fxz

What command should I run if that was not enough?

garuda-inxi

Thank you for the correction Nepti.

Great! So it does seem like you need to reboot after the update and see if the issue persists.

Unfortunately, still does not work even after a restart.

Fixing Broken Global Shortcuts in KDE Plasma 6 (Garuda Linux)

This guide walks you through diagnosing and fixing broken global keyboard shortcuts (like Alt + F4 , Ctrl + 1 , etc.) on a fresh KDE Plasma 6 install (e.g., Garuda Linux Dr460nized).

Problem

  • Common global shortcuts do not work
  • Application-level shortcuts (like Ctrl + Shift + N in Konsole) work
  • System Settings show bindings, but pressing keys does nothing

Root Cause

KDE Plasma 6 replaced the shortcut daemon (kglobalaccel5 ) with a new one: kglobalacceld . However:

  • The daemon may not autostart correctly
  • Default shortcut configs may be missing or corrupted
  • KDE does not always map shortcuts correctly on fresh installs or certain keyboards

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Verify the Daemon is Installed and Running

Run this in Fish shell:

ps aux | grep kglobalacceld

If you see something like /usr/lib/kglobalacceld , it is running. If not, start it manually:

/usr/lib/kglobalacceld &

Note: This method is temporary and stops when the terminal closes.

2. Reset KDE Shortcut Config Files

Back up and clear the current shortcut config files:

mv ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc.bak
mv ~/.config/khotkeysrc ~/.config/khotkeysrc.bak 2>/dev/null
killall kglobalacceld
/usr/lib/kglobalacceld &

This clears broken configs and restarts the shortcut daemon.

3. Reassign Shortcuts

Open System Settings → Shortcuts → KWin

  • Search for “Close Window”
  • Reassign Alt + F4
  • Apply

Test other bindings like:

  • Assign Ctrl + 1 to “Toggle Overview”
  • Try Ctrl + T in Konsole

4. Autostart the Daemon on Login (Fish Shell)

Create a persistent startup script:

mkdir -p ~/.config/autostart-scripts
set script_path ~/.config/autostart-scripts/kglobalacceld.sh

echo '#!/bin/bash' > $script_path
echo '/usr/lib/kglobalacceld &' >> $script_path
chmod +x $script_path

KDE will run this script at login.

Post-Reboot Verification

After rebooting:

ps aux | grep kglobalacceld

Ensure the daemon is running and shortcuts are working.
