My Gnome+Wayland+Nvidia Destop will not start after update

After garuda-update and restarting my computer no longer starts the Gnome desktop. The only thing I see on the screen is

Loading Linux linux-zen ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

I can ssh into the machine and everything seems OK. I didn't see any errors with journalctl -bx.

Can someone help me troubleshoot this issue? I'm not sure why Gnome wouldn't start for me after the update today.

Use last snapshot.

I tried the last snapshot but gdm also didn't start. I'm not sure why but I think the snapshots not starting correctly is another issue.

Anyway, I solve my issue. I removed the udev symlink to enable Wayland and now GDM is starting normally although with xorg I assume. It must have been some kind of Wayland issue with my system.

Then please change the headline, GNOME didn't start because you changed something and not because an update was the problem.

I have same issue. I will try your fix

You misunderstand my comment. I had Wayland enabled for about a year. The update caused Wayland to not work anymore for my setup. So, yes, the update did break my setup.

Same problem here.
I'm stuck with white screen and "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. Etc..."
I tried to disable all the extensions but nothing changed.

For the moment I'm able to run the system with hyprland session.
Waiting for the fixing (I hope it will be soon).

Try the LTS kernel for this issue.

It doesn't work either with regular kernel

Check this out:

If you have already updated, boot to a previous snapshot and set WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm/custom.conf in the after-update snapshot by

sudo nano /.snapshots/17/snapshot/etc/gdm/custom.conf

replace 17 with your snapshot number from the btrfs assistant.

before writing to the snapshot(which is read-only by default) you would have make it writable:

sudo btrfs property set -ts /.snapshots/17/snapshot ro false

after editing the /etc/gdm/custom.conf in the snapshot, make it read-only( though not necessary):

sudo btrfs property set -ts /.snapshots/17/snapshot ro true

Now boot to the updated snapshot.

My snapshots didn't help in this case because all of the snapshots had this GDM bug. I only had 10 snapshots which is the default I think. That took me only back to October 30th.

EDIT: I'm not actually sure the snapshots didn't work for me because of the GDM bug. I saw a few error messages dealing with Tor and reflector I think, but the GUI never loaded.

To boot in text only(non-GUI) mode:

After booting:

sudo nano /etc/gdm/custom.conf

then uncomment WaylandEnable=false

Unfortunately this workaround doesn't work for me.
Is there some suggested logs that I have to post?
journalctl --user seems to report nothing relevant.

cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf

File: /etc/gdm/custom.conf
# GDM configuration storage

[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=False
# Uncomment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg
WaylandEnable=false
DefaultSession=gnome-wayland.desktop

[security]

[xdmcp]

[chooser]

[debug]
# Uncomment the line below to turn on debugging
#Enable=true

In the meanwhile I tried to start the session from Lightdm but any sessions of gnome (X11 as well) don't want start.
Probably Gnome is broken at all?

Happened to me as well. I don't have NVIDIA but I'm also using gnome and wayland. I can restore the pre update snapshot, investigate and try the update again. I will also mention that after the update, when boot is going to hang as you describe, I do have 2 garuda entries in grub for some reason.

I started off expecting this to be update related and went down the road of troubleshooting that. Reflector was giving me grief updating the mirrorlists and I thought from what the wiki said that wasn't a coincidence. Update or garuda-update didn't give me any errors when they used rate-mirrors to update the mirrorlist though.

As I worked and thought about it I did realize it was likely hanging when GDM loaded. I may be dense but did put that together. I reinstalled GDM while using pacman to do another update. Same issue.

Normally I don't reboot after an update but did this time because of the update to gnome 43. Who knows how often this is happening but not known, till a reboot. I don't want to move back off wayland but your post gives me another direction to chase. I'll let you know if I make progress.

I did edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf to tell GDM to use xorg. That does work for me. I will however keep watching for a solution that does fix the issue.

Did you try this?

Just tried both the LTS and main kernels and they don't change it for me. I have seen that uninstalling gstreamer-vaapi fixes it but I don't know a safe way to do that. It doesn't have a dependency that I have installed but it is part of the gstreamer meta so pacman squawks about that when I try to remove it.

Found an entry in the bug report on Arch.
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/76368?project=1&string=gdm
A person solved it by installing the right VA-API driver for his GPU, intel-media-driver. That was also the solution for me and my 11th gen i5 tiger lake. Turned wayland back on in custom.conf and using garuda settings and it works just fine.

No way...
I've already intel-media-driver installed, then I tried to remove gstreamer-vaapi but nothing is changed.
I've Intel 3rd generation as integrated and NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M.
Probably have I to work on nvidia drivers?
