Kwin_wayland using 300%+ CPU! Mouse jumps, keyboard repeats

I have just installed Garuda Dragonized on an old Intel Core 2 Quad system that used to be my Windows 7/10 system. Booting the system from USB ran fine and the install did not report any problems. The initial screen comes up and looks great. I can log in and all is fine. As soon as I start any graphical process, such as RANI, the system bogs down massively, the mouse stutters and jumps, and the keyboard respose is slow and often repeats a key multiple times.

I installed and started the ssh daemon and loging in from my other PC, a top command shows kwin_wayland using >300% CPU!
Since this is using an nvidia GTX 970, I’m guessing that there is a driver issue, however, I have not been able to figure out how to properly change the driver in use. Since this was just installed, if I’ve messed up the system attempting to follow instructions from various other nvidia posts, I’ll happily start over, but the issue has not changed with the attempts I’ve tried thus far to change the drivers.

I hope this isn’t something totally stupid that I’ve done. I’m much more familiar with Red Hat Enterprise and don’t normally have any interest in graphics/gaming. But I’m hoping to try to install & run a Windows ERP client under Linux as a way to replace a bunch of Windows 10 PCs that won’t upgrade to Windows 11 but are othersize just fine for the office workers. If all goes well, I’ll also try to do some limited gaming on this machine here at home.

You do realize this computer is pushing 20 years old, (most are older than the last installed bios).

You should likely be running one of our lower resource editions such as KDE Lite or our Xfce edition on hardware this old.

Have you tried running KDE in an X session?

Since only Wayland is preinstalled on this release and no issues apparently arose in the live environment, which drivers did you use to boot the live.iso, open source or proprietary Nvidia drivers?

Looks like it.

The Nvidia drivers are correct for the Maxwell GPU and are installed, but at least in userspace, nouveau is loaded instead of the nvidia module:

Try blacklisting nouveau, then reboot and check if the nvidia module is loaded (and if that fixes your issue).

Alternatively, you can uninstall the nouveau driver, which will automatically load the nvidia driver.

Sorry for being such a newbie to graphical Linux. I’ve worked on/with Linux for many years, but always from a character screen…

I’ve been looking for how to blacklist a driver and I guess my seach skills are a fail at this point. Is there a basic wiki article on how to do this, or a simple command line you could point me to?

Open Garuda Rani, click on ā€œBoot toolsā€ and add module_blacklist=nouveau in the ā€œGaruda Boot Optionsā€ under ā€œKernel parametersā€. It should then look like this:

quiet loglevel=3 module_blacklist=nouveau

Then press ā€œApplyā€ and ā€œCloseā€. After that, reboot and post the output of:

inxi -Gxx

Or you can simply remove nouveau:

sudo pacman -R xf86-video-nouveau

And please answer all questions:

I’m going to have to go boot the ventoy USB to find that as I had no clue I’d care. So please give me some time to do that as I’m at work at the moment.

So I tried this and after the re-boot, the system just gave me a black screen with a cursor.
I was able to remove the boot option and reset grub using ssh from my windows PC, reboot, and was back to the original state.

So ā€˜pacman -R xf86-video-nouveau’ refused the removal request since there were dependencies.
I tried doing ā€˜pacman -Rsc xf86-video-nouveau’ which the system seemed to be happy with.
I also did a garuda-update, then rebooted.
Sadly, that didn’t do it, as I still have the high usage and stuttering when I open garuda-rani. :frowning:

I’m curious why the process IDs would have gotten so high. Maybe something is failing that I’m not seeing and then restarting at a very high rate?

Interestingly, when the system times out the console and puts it to sleep, the usage drops to near zero.
Even with the usage high, the ssh session runs fine and is very speedy with no problems.

Yup, the box is old, and has always been stable, hence why I’m using it to try to test making the Windows ERP interface program run under Linux.

I have not tried running KDE in an X session. I don’t know how. :frowning:
I’m more then willing to try if there is a wiki on the change or you have some instructions I can follow.

No Nvidia driver is loaded, so no processes are running on the GPU. You can try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers:

sudo pacman -S nvidia-580xx-dkms

Then reboot and check again.

X11 session is not preinstalled, you can install it with:

sudo pacman -S plasma-x11-session

Then reboot and select Plasma (X11) as the desktop session on the login screen.

If that doesn’t help, it would probably be easiest to reinstall Garuda.

The installation is still recent, it’s not working properly, and no one knows what you tried before you opened this topic.

Okay, so I have booted into the original live file system from the ventoy installer USB flash drive I created.
I have tried both the NVIDIA driver boot and the FOSS driver boot.
I have captured as much data as I could think of and will post it befow

Notes:

  1. The NVIDIA boot does have some slow down/stuttering, but nothing like the installed version.
  2. The FOSS boot seems to work fine for Dolphin and Firedragon, including watching youtube videos w/sound. However, Garuda-Rani hangs at 20% when loading.

Becasuse of the file sizes, I’ll post the information for the two different boots as seperate posts.

Booting from USB into the open source drivers for the GTX 970:

So I did the ā€˜pacman -S nvidia-580xx-dkms’ and the ā€˜pacman -S plasma-x11-session’ followed by a garuda-update and reboot.
That seems to have resolved the issues. Garuda-rani comes up fine, multiple windows can be opened and there is no performance hit, stuttering, or character duplicating while working on the system. Both desktop environments behave properly.

Thank you for your assistance and patience.

I have even tried the ERP client under wine and it seems to be working, though I have additional setups to do before I can verify complete operation of the application, this is an amazing advance in the testing.
