This reminded me that I just played a bit of Commander Keen the other day… and we’re getting so off topic here. Ok, going back to my first post I see that I complained about Driftland… I’m gonna test it again after this latest realization that I wasn’t using my RTX and will come back with comments.
thanks, I’ll be 40 next February =) still too many games to play. For me and for a dear friend that departed this year.
–edit
ok, I just tried starting the game and everything is already better. While before the game wouldn’t go beyond “initializing”, now it didn’t take it more than about 30s to go from me pushing “play” to me seeing the main menu. And I’m running zen.
I’m going to post this separately to mark as answer… turns out the problems (at least with Driftland, but it was so impactful) seemed to go away after I followed these instructions to use only the nVidia graphics card:
Both the problem with game stuck in “Starting up” and performance issues that seemed previously to be linked to zen kernel and wouldn’t happen on clear kernel didn’t happen anymore.
I just played a whole single player x AI match of the game for 3.5 hours and the only problem I had was a minor hiccup happening without apparent reason where, for around a minute, FPS would drop from steady 60 to 4-5, then go back to normal. (yes, I was monitoring CPU and GPU usage and temperature, nothing changed)
