KDE 6 repository / testing

Whats going on here?

Hi everyone!

During the last weeks, we have been working on building KDE 6 and a new repo called chaotic-aur-kde. @alexjp did most of the work by bringing up the needed PKGBUILDs to build via our infra.

Although this is still very early, things are working pretty well. The current status is that KDE frameworks and Plasma are mostly/all ported, but some KDE apps still aren’t, eg. Okular.

Needless to say, this isn’t guaranteed stability due to the nature of master branch builds, and please do a snapshot before trying this :warning:

Still, one Chaotic-AUR member has been using it for the last week without “any” issues (meaning crashes that would interrupt workflow).

How to make use of it? :eyes:

  • add [chaotic-aur-kde] to /etc/pacman.conf before any other repo

    [chaotic-aur-kde]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/chaotic-mirrorlist

  • Update package lists via pacman -Sy

  • Save the package lists offered below to files called kf6, extra, plasma (we will be using them in the next step)

  • Use pacman --overwrite ‘*’ when installing the packages listed below

pacman -S (cat kf6 extra plasma) --overwrite '*'

  • Restore SDDM theme back to breeze:

    [Theme]
    # Current theme name
    Current=breeze
    CursorTheme=breeze_cursors

It is recommended to keep theming to a minimum, so please change KDE themes back to Breeze.

There is an additional list of packages that are based on Qt6 that you wish to install, but currently, it’s not needed, because Qt5 apps should work on KDE 6 (that is why overwrite is needed, and not recommended to uninstall those Plasma 6 packages. Hopefully, the Arch packages from Plasma 5 and Plasma 6 can be installed without any file conflicts).

Another disclaimer: the packages are being updated every 3 hours with the latest git changes, so … any bad Git commit can ruin your workflow, so please have that in mind :warning:

However, if you find packaging issues, please report them here in the forum for now. In the coming days, a Git repo will be created and you will then also be able to submit issues there.

Thanks, everyone. Have a nice day!

Danke fürs Einrichten.

Thanks for setting it up.

thanks @SGS .

From talking with kde devs, it seems its an issue with these packages. Will try to fix this issue!

Major version changes are never smooth, not in KDE, never. I’ve been through them all.

But I think you and @alexjp are doing a wonderful thing for Garuda users, @dr460nf1r3, and possibly KDE. When you’re out there on your own, you’re on your own. Many KDE Projects have only one developer and little testing. But “many hands make light work” my mom used to say.

It’s really nice to see this level of involvement.

Thanks a lot

I know how much work it is, to create or port all these packages, so thanks a lot for this effort.

:tada:

 happy to report fixed !

Please allow new kio-extras package to install (may be needed pacman switch --overwrite ‘*’)

kio-extras: /usr/share/applications/kcm_trash.desktop exists in filesystem (owned by kio5)
sudo pacman -Syu --overwrite '/usr/share/applications/kcm_trash.desktop'

Restart
Works except for the standard wallpaper “Black Dragon”.

Funny bar  , only fills, down and to the side, when an app window is in full screen mode. Can’t describe it any better than that.

Side note, secondary is that Octopi does not display the “handbag” and Chaotic-AUR also does not have its own icon in Garuda-Welcome.

Do you get the “link”
KDE Plasma 6.0 Dev. Visit bugs.kde.org to report problems.
gone? , kidding.

Now I have new starter/launcher logo from beauty icons

@alexjp I post here what I notice, which does not mean you have to fix

I use “color” breeze dark, Plasma Style Breeze (follow…)
I do not use Sweet or Sweetified
but

The rosy rose pink is still there and always in use :exploding_head:
Same with FireDragon, I use dark not sweet.

Wo habt ihr Jungs das, verdammt nochmal, eingebaut? @dr460nf1r3

Liegt wohl an der Dev, aber fehlt mir

well … I am trying to rebuild everything with qt 6.6.0 … things might be tricky until it finishes

Things are still ongoing, but seems working for now and should be safe to update!

Critical Error  this (Wayland) is shown as Telegram-Desktop icon.

That’s the new default with Plasma 6, the bottom Panel (we call it dock) is floating, that’s how they call it. You can disable it and return to normal dock through the EDIT MODE and Panel Options.

weird … I use telegram to ask @dr460nf1r3 for help, and it shows the proper icon !
the startupwmclass or .desktop filename should be org.telegram.desktop (making filename org.telegram.desktop.desktop)

hum… maybe … after hard times with qt 6.6.0 move, now arch is starting itself the kde6 packaging:
https://archlinux.org/packages/?repo=KDE-Unstable&sort=-last_update

this is great (and could have saved me days of work) but gonna have to see how they do things and adapt!

The goal is to always source from arch… and then transform the PKGBUILDS to git repos.
This way, if I get hit by the bus factor (and my town has lots of buses… and big ones) … the packages continue building. (at most, have to way until arch fixes them upon new release)

hum… after huge break yesterday where kde team ported some code to other places, and a huge battle with rabbit hole dependencies…

its working (what is working really?) again!

The supporter of the early tests has left the forum and was not very active here.
So for me the window buttons still don’t work.
Is this just me?
I guess since my attempts to beautify the dock, or whatever it’s called in KDE, also resulted in a malfunction, I’ll have to start over. :frowning:
I’m also not very helpful as I lack a lot of basics on Plasma.
How many are still testing here?
