Subject: Firedragon Not Supporting 3D Rendering and High-Intensity Tasks (Possible ACPI/i915 Issues)

Body:

Hello Garuda community,

I’m a data science student experiencing issues with Firedragon’s performance when attempting 3D rendering and playing high-definition YouTube videos. Specifically, I’m finding that Firedragon struggles with these tasks, leading to poor performance and stuttering.

While investigating the issue, I’ve noticed several ACPI BIOS errors and Intel i915 driver-related messages in my system logs (journalctl). It appears there might be underlying kernel/BIOS issues affecting my system’s graphics capabilities.

Here’s the relevant information from my system:

System Information:

  • Laptop Model: Acer Aspire Lite AL15-52
  • Operating System: Garuda Linux (Please specify your Garuda edition if possible)
  • Kernel Version: (Please provide the output of uname -r)
  • Browser: Firedragon
  • Graphics: Intel Integrated Graphics (i915)

BIOS Settings:

  • Secure Boot: Enabled
  • UEFI: Not supported on this device (Legacy BIOS)
  • SATA Mode: Not available in BIOS settings

Relevant Log Messages (from journalctl):

Specific Issues:

  • 3D Rendering: Firedragon struggles to render 3D plots and visualizations smoothly.
  • HD YouTube Playback: High-definition videos stutter and experience dropped frames.
  • ACPI Errors: The ACPI BIOS errors suggest potential firmware issues.
  • i915 Call Trace: The i915 driver-related messages in the logs indicate possible problems with the Intel graphics driver.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • (List any steps you’ve already tried, like updating drivers, trying different browsers, etc.)

Questions:

  • Are these ACPI errors and i915 driver issues likely to be the cause of my Firedragon performance problems?
  • Are there any recommended kernel parameters or driver configurations I should try?
  • Is there a way to resolve the ACPI errors given that UEFI is not supported on my device?
  • Are there any specific Firedragon settings I should adjust for better performance?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

If you use AI helper, just follow the command and do not post the complete text, you can save time and work if you just post the garuda-inxi.

post the full log, https://bin.garudalinux.org/ , not what you think is relevant.

Apart from one problem per thread thing, I think, next time if people use AI, but do not follow the template I just delete the post

Can you please try the same tasks with both Firefox and Floorp browser? If the problem is there to, this might be an upstream issue. If not, try the troubleshooting steps.

hey , i just made the text out with ai , i m not that techie , i have just started this opensource journey and got some concerns , and their are many things i am into which dont allow me to spend time trouble shoot them , thus i approached here ,
i have programming exam nearby and their are some issue with stability of drivers and bios which i dont know , and i have used computer itself from just 6 month in windows , :face_without_mouth:

This is complete nonsense:

Your “half” garuda-inxi clearly shows the opposite. Please do yourself and us a favor and stop using a stupid pseudo AI. And if English is not your native language, please use an online translator.

btw:

Please post your complete garuda-inxi.

The swoosh indicates a pending reboot after a system update, so please reboot your system.

Preferably not at all, especially if you have too little knowledge to check the output of a pseudo AI for correctness. Just describe your problem yourself, give us the information we need and we will try our best to help you.

How can i learn enough, any guidelines , so that i can contribute something to garuda ?

One question to your answer. New with Arch based distros or
newbie with Linux ?
If you are new with Linux, perhaps is then your decision for a arch based distro not the best. To use arch, your learning curve should increase to 500% within a very short time. Without basic knowledge it becomes difficult.
If you like to spend time for reading, learning and working on your OS the relevant stuff and you have the time to do this then ok → if not then read in the www which Linux at the moment is for you “suitable.”
(only my mind, of course)
To solve your problem, special Acer Laptops with igpu intel + dpgu nvidia only this.
Acer support for Linux = 0.
Only in forums / community / AI ?, you will find relevant information and help.
To find why your igpu is running and active and your dgpu is running but not active can have several reasons.
Sorry for my long typing, not the first time, i know.

hmm , i previously used ubuntu but not that intense to get into underhood just surving , and i am known to fact that arch is not for new , but i thought garuda wont be problematic and yup i would love to learn … :upside_down_face:

Hm , brave is supporting the same task but dragon isnt ,

Your prob is not arch then (perhaps a little bit)
your prob is Acer gpu Intel + gpu nvidia.
Pls read stuff about nvidia-prime ..install it..run/configure and perhaps your
“problem” is solved.
To look if your dgpu is running and active use nvidia-smi (konsole)

  • use htop or btop+ to see what´s going on. (special memory / gpu usage)

What about Firefox & Floorp, do they work?

not tried yet , but yup brave working ,

:red_question_mark:
Post the output of

pacman -Qs xf86-video-intel

If you have installed this driver, remove it again:

sudo pacman -R xf86-video-intel

Reboot and check if you still have issues.
