GPU has fallen off the bus

If they’re that gullible, tell them to back off or poof! you’ll make them “disappear” then see how they react.

Well, I am unfortunately back. At the risk of alienating @nepti , I’m wondering if I may have missed something basic in driver installation? When I look at the drivers through the Settings Manager, it tells me both video-nvidia-dkms and video-linux are installed. I’ve been trying to look around, and it seems like the open source drivers sometimes cause issues if I’m understanding right (probably not)? Should I be uninstalling video-linux?

Another thing - I have an instinct, but it’s kind of hard to prove, that video (including games) somehow is increasing the chances of crash. This session went a while without any crash, but I barely do stuff on it rn. I had doomscrolled plenty of sites with video autoplay on, but when I opened up a video to watch, it crashed within ten minutes. I know some of the other crashes are unrelated to video, but I have a feeling the probability increases when there’s a “streaming image” being run (for lack of a better term).

That’s all fine.

  1. At the very beginning you installed the Nvidia card, but didn’t install any Nvidia drivers and only used the iGPU ← was the system stable?

  2. Then you installed the nvidia drivers and used the nvidia card ← that’s where the problems started, right?

  3. Then you used the iGPU again (the card and nvidia drivers were still installed), the issues still remained but there was no longer a black screen, right?

  4. Then you used the Nvidia card again and the issues still occur today, right?

Yes (first integrated only, even though the Nvidia card was physically installed, then dedicated and problems, problems don’t crash session if I use integrated)

One other interesting thing is that iirc, I forgot to plug the monitor into the GPU for a while after installing the drivers, so the Nvidia drivers were present, but the Nvidia card wasn’t being used. I’m pretty sure I didn’t have any issues then. They only started once I plugged in the monitor. idk if that helps with anything.

Ok.

What bothers me the most is that pin has no value (A) and just a “?” outputs.

To check if the PCIe 5.0 x16 slot is dirty or broken:
Turn off your computer and disconnect the system power cord from the power supply. Insert the graphics card into the PCIe 4.0 x16 slot at the bottom. Turn the computer back on, boot garuda and post the output from:

lspci -vv

Leave the card in the slot until the issues occur again.
As soon as the problems occur again, post the full nvidia-bug-report if possible (or journalctl).

Isn’t the solution in post 8?

If not, please remove the check mark.

ok, more TIL stuff, and a bit more backstory. Some time after the problem showed up, a coworker thought it might be that the GPU wasn’t plugged into the power supply well, I opened up the machine and checked it, and seeing that there was also a 16-pin plug on the bottom, I plugged it in there for good measure (in case the top one was somehow damaged) - I hadn’t realized there was a difference between them. As a result, I’ve been on the 4.0 since then. I don’t know if you’d still specifically want the lspci -vv, but just in case, I’m attaching a link to the full readout (too long to post) and pasting what I suspect is the most relevant part here:

lmk if I should try switching it back to the 5.0. Either way, I’ll see if I can generate the full bug report on next crash, or use journalctl otherwise.

Thanks!

That looks better @ nvidia card.
Leave the card in the PCIe 4.0 x16 and see if the issues reoccur.

I noticed something else in the old lspci that matches the current one - that’s why I wanted the full output. But at first it’s just a suspicion.

Is the computer self-made?

It wasn’t a package - the store I bought from lets you pick parts and they build it, I suspect that means yes for these purposes.

ok, I managed to get ssh up, and ran a game that recently has consistently triggered the issue (it didn’t before)

The same error occurs in both slots: PCI bridge / PCI Express root port. Since the 5.0 depends on the CPU and the 4.0 on the chipset, the mobo should be fine.

The question is whether the card triggers this or the driver.
Put the card back into the 5.0 slot, remove the nvidia driver and install the nouveau driver to test.

Edit: The same game with the nouveau driver: post the output from

lspci -vv

In case of a crash: journalctl + lspci -vv.

Edit 2: The error is always the same from the start, the PCI bridge has a problem and kicks out the graphics card (journalctl/dmesg).
In all nvidia bug reports the PCI bridge is faulty and there is no indication of a driver error.
What’s interesting is that the PCI bridge wasn’t working properly even before the issues, it generally doesn’t work properly.
That’s why I wanted the full log from lspci -vv from before the crash. This is the state after booting and before the crash:

Did I understand correctly that the card was in the lower PCIex16 4.0 slot the whole time?

I opened up the machine to plug the GPU into the 5.0 slots, but am now a bit confused by what I’m finding in terms of the power supply’s setup. There are five 8-pin slots marked CPU/VGA/PCI-E, with three on the top and two on the bottom. When I opened up the machine, all three top slots were taken, afaict two by the CPU, and one that was plugged into the GPU. There was another 8-pin plugged into the GPU on the bottom. I suspect I only realized one of them was plugged into the GPU when I messed around with it before. I’ve now moved the two CPU 8-pins to the bottom row, and have the two GPU 8-pins next to each other on the top. I still get crashes, so I’m going to try deleting the nvidia drivers - I’ve got a question about that at the bottom.

I can’t find any documentation of there being any difference between the top and the bottom sockets, I just figured I’d raise that just in case for some reason this particular PSU is different. It’s a ROG Thor 850P, though the diagram in the manual looks different than what I’ve got (it shows three rows of sockets, there are only two on mine).

I had thought so, but discovered that half was plugged into the top row and half on the bottom, but then also can’t find any references to which are 4.0 and which 5.0 in this unit (mentioned above). At this point, both 8-pins attached to the nvidia GPU are plugged in adjacent to each other on the top row.

Just in case it’s relevant, I did change one other BIOS setting - I enabled having the iGPU work even when there’s a discrete graphics card. I figure I’ll need to do this to be able to delete the nvidia drivers, and it would be useful anyway.

I’m trying to uninstall the nvidia drivers, as recommended. I’m using the Settings Manager, and when I try uninstalling video-nvidia-dkms (the only proprietary nvidia driver installed), it tells me it can’t bc garuda-nvidia-rime-config needs it. I suspect I can use something like sudo mhwd --remove pci nvidia-dkms but I’d really prefer to check in before I potentially send a wrecking ball through everything.

On another note, I ran mhwd -li just bc I’d seen it run in some other thread, and it says the video-linux version is 2021.08.29, which seems quite old to me. I routinely update the system, so I would have thought I have the latest drivers? idk. Similarly, video-nvidia-prime-render-offload shows up as an option in the hardware config in the Setting Manager, but isn’t installed. Should it be? afaict it’s for dual setups with a iGPU and discrete nvidia GPU (like my setup), but I don’t want to further bork things at this point.

Looking at another thread I found, it looks like the way to get rid of video-nvidia-dkms is to first do sudo pacman -R garuda-nvidia-prime-config, I’ve done that and removed video-nvidia-dkms. I think the Nouveau drivers are video-linux? If so, I’ve got them installed already. I’ve been running on the iGPU, I’ll reboot now into the GPU.

I did get a crash eventually, I had forgotten to do lspci -vv first, but did at least do it afterwards. This one is different from previous ones, though - no fan spinning, for one. I had a recording playing, and it’s been running without problems since (over 30min, for sure). I’m even able to interact with the session. Plugging the monitor into the CPU still doesn’t give me any image (while still in the middle of the session that started on the GPU), but I think that’s expected.

Here’s the lspci from after the crash:

λ lspci -vv

Here’s the nvidia-bug-report: Garuda's PrivateBin

You’re ruining a holiday for me

I don’t know if I’m misunderstanding you or you’re misunderstanding me (plug vs. slot). How to connect the GPU is described in the power supply manual and in the Nvidia manual.
Slots are the two slots on the mobo, the upper one is a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and the lower one is a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot.
The GPU goes into the top PCIe 5.0 x16 slot.

A kind of null method:
Remove the GPU from the computer and connect the monitor to the iGPU.
Turn on your computer and go to BIOS.
Disable everything that is called RAID, VMD or Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) - you only have one drive → Safe and Exit.
Boot Garuda and post the output again:

oh my, I was just out myself - please don’t feel obligated to answer while you’re out, it can wait. ofc I want my main machine to work, but you’ve already given me so much of your time, and I do have another machine to work from.

I was misunderstanding you. fwiw, it’s in the 5.0/top one (and always has been). I’ve pulled the GPU out entirely, and in BIOS I’ve disabled the VMD controller. Rapid Storage was already off, and I don’t see any other settings for RAID. (I did also find that there was something that looked like an ASPM module that was still active - native PCI power management, or something like that. I disabled that too.)

I still have weirdness in Garuda itself once booting through - wallpaper doesn’t render, menus tear/flicker, some things don’t work right.

Should I be trying the GPU in the 4.0 socket in the mobo?

And again, thanks for everything so far, and don’t worry about pushing this until after the vacation.

It was just a joke

No, I wanted to know if the GPU is causing this. But she doesn’t do that:

and:

Disabling RAID/VMD/RST was intended to exclude a conflict between the PCIe NVMe controller and the resources of the PCI bus.
You have the same problem with the iGPU.

You could try resetting the BIOS and reinstalling garuda (without the RTX 4070 Ti). Only in a minimal configuration.

But at the moment I’m assuming a hardware defect.

There is a known issue with this driver causing kernel memory corruption. This can result in crashes, hard freezes, or other issues. With kernel memory corruption, the behavior you get is somewhat unpredictable but will generally look like bad hardware.

There is a related discussion in this topic from another forum if you would like to take a look:

There don’t seem to be any super great options for dealing with this right now. You can downgrade the driver and associated packages, which may require switching kernels as well, or scrap the drivers altogether and run Nouveau for a while. Have a read through that thread and see what you think.

Would that mean a motherboard issue? I’m guessing the issue is the Interrupt: pin ? lines, but don’t really know what I’m looking at.

I’m mainly curious bc it would be a whole lot easier for to not need to drag the whole case in to the shop, though I certainly can if I need to.

@BluishHumility if it was the issue you mentioned, would it also explain the issues I’m having with the iGPU?

Thanks for your input @BluishHumility.
I know the problem with version 550.67 and had that in mind. The OP is now on version 550.76. But the issues occur in all scenarios and have been for a long time (version 535.113.01). With GPU and nVidia drivers, with GPU and Nouveau drivers. And now without GPU but on the iGPU. The fact that the PCI bus does not provide an interrupt pin has been true from the beginning. In the last nvidia bug report there is also a chipset error.
