Garuda freezing and stuttering all the time

Hi! Thank you for taking the time to read my issue.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to Arch and BTRFS, and decided to go for Garuda as it promised speed right out of the box. But just after a day or two after installing on an SSHD, it started to freeze quite often.

I have a suspicion that its got something to do with the snapshots, so I switched over to RSYNC from BTRFS, and made sure to set the "keep" option to 1. I also performed a rebalance and set compression and autodefrag options at boot time, but my issue persisted.

I have an XPS 15, so I'm sure my hardware is up to spec (I've run Ubuntu[ext4] with the same HW configuration and never ran into such issues). I have no clue what logs you may require from me, but I'll be more than happy to provide them.

The freezes that I know are of

  1. GPU freezes
  2. Cpu freezes
    3 ram freezes
    4 hdd/ssd ie I/o Freezes

We need to know what your system spec is so provide what's necessary

Sometimes kernel needs to be changed until found suitable kernel for ex try lts kernel or an optimised kernel or mainline kernel

Sometimes issues are with GPU
If it's nvidia then you have to rely on nvidia and that's not reliable
If it's amd/intel then many times changing kernel works

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I was actually referring to the fact that there was no stuttering in my previous install so as to rule out the hardware itself.

Nope, i just think there may be some silly thing I missed which is keeping me from enjoying what is an otherwise really cool OS :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

As @librewish already stated test some alternate kernels (at least 4).

I would suggest:

linux-next-git
linux

Does this happen when only using your Intel video adapter?

You did not describe the freezing in great detail. Have you tried to get to a TTY when this happens. Can you see your cap lock state change on your keyboard if you press the caps key? Is it a complete lock up requiring a hard power down?

Is your bios up to date?

It was happening even before I installed the NVidia drivers

The freezing mainly occurs when I try to open a new folder or application mainly, but sometimes even out of the blue. It lasts about 5-10 seconds and then everything I tried clicking opens at once. This to me points towards heavy disk utilization, but I have no clue what’s causing it.

That is much more useful information. Now at least we know you are not experiencing complete hard lockups. This is good news because your logs should contain useful information about what's happening. When a a complete lock up occurs there is often little in the logs that is helpful.

Open a separate terminal window and run a continuous live log output:

journalctl -f

Leave this running in terminal until you experience a freeze. Note the time when the freeze occurs. Afterwards post excerpts from the log around the timez several freeze's happened. Try doing different things to provoke a freeze then post the logs from around those events.

Do not post the entire log please, simply post excerpts from around events of importance.

So I also used iotop and found out that the following processes are constantly taking up IO cycles:

There are a ton of these errors popping up, so perhaps the very act of logging these many messages is causing the freezing? Or do you think its something else?

I would search online the errors that are not xcb related (which are usually of little significance).

So that's just an error about my VS code keychain acting wonky. The other errors/warnings are also program specific. I ran journalctl -f multiple times, and see very similar outputs. I don't think journalctl -f is telling us where the problem is :confused:

One more clue I found as to what the problem might be is that it locks up much more frequently when I'm installing or updating something using pacman, and I try and do other stuff.

I would disable the baloo indexer temporarily. There is a setting for this in the KDE Systems Settings app. Perform a search if you need more instructions.
