sudo pacman -Rc (pacman -Qqs nvidia)
Uhmmm bash is telling me that it doesn’t recognize ‘(’
“syntax error near unexpected token”
Oh right, bash…
I can’t remember and I’m not in front of a computer right now to check, can you just switch to Fish?
fish
And then try again.
sudo pacman -Rc (pacman -Qqs nvidia)
Or you could just type them out.
sudo pacman -Rc [type each package name]
Okay one concern tho. When I type
sudo pacman -Rc libvdpau
It wants to also remove things like vlc, telegram, okular, plasma-firewall, obs and lots of stuff I use. So I’m removing everything else from the list above from
pacman -Qs Nvidia
And I’ll be waiting for you to confirm to me about libvdpau
Wowowow okay now other packages are also being removed. Tell you what, before I click Yes I’ll just paste the output here just so we can be sure this is actually it, cause it looks like it will strip naked my system.
sudo pacman -Rc (pacman -Qqs nvidia) | nc termbin.com 9999

Libxnvctrl
Lib32-libvdpau
Egl-wayland
And I’m pretty sure Psensor went away with libxnbctrl
Oh sorry…let’s not do that, a bit more aggressive than I had in mind. Let’s just do this:
sudo pacman -Rdd (pacman -Qqs nvidia)
Did that, rebooted, still no image
Let’s get some refreshed info to see what changed?
pacman -Qs nvidia
Didn’t return anything.

If this is all irrelevant please disregard xD just thought it could be needed after uninstalling the Nvidia stuff
Okay, lets take a peek in here real quick:
cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf | nc termbin.com 9999
# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES=(crc32c-intel intel_agp i915 amdgpu radeon nouveau)
MODULES=(crc32c-intel intel_agp i915 amdgpu radeon nouveau)
# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=()
# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=()
# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No RAID, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS=(base)
#
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup assembles a mdadm array with an encrypted root file system.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm_udev' for more information on RAID devices.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf keyboard keymap consolefont block mdadm_udev encrypt filesystems fsck)
#
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group.
# HOOKS=(base udev modconf block lvm2 filesystems fsck)
#
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr and fsck hooks.
HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf kms keyboard keymap consolefont block encrypt filesystems fsck)
# COMPRESSION
# Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, zstd compression
# is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.
#COMPRESSION="zstd"
#COMPRESSION="gzip"
#COMPRESSION="bzip2"
#COMPRESSION="lzma"
#COMPRESSION="xz"
#COMPRESSION="lzop"
#COMPRESSION="lz4"
# COMPRESSION_OPTIONS
# Additional options for the compressor
#COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=()
# MODULES_DECOMPRESS
# Decompress kernel modules during initramfs creation.
# Enable to speedup boot process, disable to save RAM
# during early userspace. Switch (yes/no).
#MODULES_DECOMPRESS="yes"
Looks good to me. Let’s make sure everything is up to date/no missing packages after removing that stuff, and reinstall the kernel so we have a new initramfs to boot with.
garuda-update linux-lts
Did that, rebooted:
No deal.
It’s really late over here and I suppose it might be night for you too. I deeply appreciate your help, but I don’t want to hinder your resting time. I will be going to rest right now and I suggest we start fresh tomorrow
Thanks a million times for all the effort so far!
Sounds good, hopefully we’ll get some fresh eyes on this topic tomorrow as well and some other folks from the community can help us crack the case.
Good work @BluishHumility
This confirms what I’ve suspected all along: it’s trying to load the nvidia-module
.
My suggestion would be: early KMS start with the i915-module
for the iGPU.
@AoriOjin
The iGPU is the integrated graphics unit in your ‘Intel Core i3-8100’ CPU.
How do we fix that, then? xD
I agree this is a good thought, but it looks like he’s already got this set up:
My question is: why is that pesky Nvidia driver hanging around (even in a non-loaded state)? Where is that coming from?
Let’s take a look at that log mentioned in the startx
screenshot and see if there are any clues in there.
cat ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
I am wondering if we should move the Xorg configs to backup, and reinstall the package to get new ones. What do you guys think?

It’s like the drunk guy you kicked out of your Christmas party, but somehow he keeps making his way back inside.
Let’s try blacklisting the Nvidia module.
sudo micro /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia.conf
Add a blacklist entry:
blacklist nvidia
Regenerate the initramfs:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
Regenerate the Grub configuration file:
sudo update-grub
Reboot, and if it still fails let’s take another look at the Xorg log to see what it says.
Just a shot in the dark: the uninstalled and no longer available nvidia stuff blacklists.
It is possible that we find the problem and fix it, but the actual trigger still remains.
Honestly, I think a fresh install makes more sense. Simply because you have a clean and fundamentally error-free system.
I have writen this before he uploadet the xorg.0.log
…
BTW: x11 does not load a fallback module.
Man, that nvidia is sure giving us a ride. I hope when my AMD GPU arrives ot doesn’t make another nightmare about it.
Anyway here’s the xorg log again

Is that a new log? It looks exactly the same.
Let’s try moving the Xorg configs to backup, then reinstall to Xorg to get the default configs.
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d_backup
sudo pacman -S xorg
Then reboot and test again.
Alright, YOU’VE DONE IT BLUISH, THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH! You’re awesome!
Unfortunetly now it seems like some programs like blender, celluloid, vlc, obs… have a dependency on libvdpau. The error message is
[software]: error while loading shared libraries: libvdpau.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
That is probably something that happened when we aggressively tried removing Nvidia. Should I just reinstall libvdpau or…?
ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTICE:
I have no sound ‘-’
