Fresh install, not saving settings between restart + odd errors

My magic ball just arrived from repair-shop and asked it about your issue.
Imagine the answer!!

:mage: You have to stop booting into your ISO installer medium over and over again! :stars: :star2:

If this is not true, post your system info:

@jonathon no, I initially reported the broken system and then did another fresh install. The problem here is identical breakage in both cases. In the second situation, that we're on now, I'm having the same experience after NOT installing a lot of offered packages. I refused "Ultimate" and did not install anything.

I did try a restoration the first time and that also changed nothing and so I proceeded with reinstall.

@petsam no, I am not booting to the installer medium - it is not actually mounted, I just happened to have it plugged in. I yanked it out - same results and here you go:

I tried to post these just after you messaged me yesterday, but apparently a bug or problem that the moderators hit would not allow me to post until I reached the next day.

And just to be clear, same System Settings -> Connections error (no such file or directory) as well as the other aforenoted problems of not saving settings between sessions, etc.

I cannot find out what this is or where it belongs.
Itā€™s like you are running a Franken-systemā€¦

If this is not a user created error/situation and suspecting Garuda is responsible for affecting user account settings is very serious thing.
In no way should the user settings get changed because of a system or package behavior.

I doubt it is not a user fault.
If it were, there would be more reports about it, even on unofficial support web-pages.

A possible (but unlikely probable) reason could be an AUR program.
I run Arch, so I canā€™t objectively exclude anything on a Garuda system, so I would rather wait for a Garuda user or dev to investigate this more confidently.
@librewish @TNE @dr460nf1r3 ? I am out of ideas :man_shrugging:

Well, there are several things which I dont understand here:

  1. Arch Linux - plasma-nm 5.27.10-1 (x86_64) - File List plasma-nm is providing the library /usr/lib/qt/plugins/kcm_networkmanagement.so which is preinstalled in dr460nized. I cant imagine anything Garuda related changing that particular file
  2. That package is provided by Arch, thus no library mismatch errors can occur due to not updated packages
  3. Installer actually works with autologin ootb for me reliably
  4. Settings should be saved between sessions, unless you are running the guest session

There is one situation in which the latest dotfiles are copied to the user directory in Garuda assistant after the initial upgrade. Did you run the setup assistant multiple times? @yaruda

@dr460nf1r3 can you find this file with pacman -F <file> ?

@yaruda I see you have syncthing installed from AUR. Is there a chance you have set it to sync your $HOME folder or any user config folders with syncthing? That is a reasonable answer to this but so much awkward settingā€¦ :zipper_mouth_face:

Not at all :eyes:
That being said, I have plasma-nm installed and working nevertheless :astonished:

No. I only ran the mirror selection tool + updates. That is the only thing I did that presented problems on this clean install @dr460nf1r3.

@petsam I literally did nothing else in the way of customization on this install. No synchronization, nada.

I suppose I can do a final 3rd fresh install as a sanity check here for you guys before moving on to another distro. I'm quite losing my mind at this point and my Hackintosh is more sane than this thus far, which in and of itself is insane. I hate to just dump this since it really seems you've done a great job @dr460nf1r3 in making this look more macOS like and I'm trying to find a Linux distro based on KDE that really brings the complete macOS UX to a Linux platform right now.

If I do a final 3rd try at a fresh install, can you please explicitly tell me what steps to follow following the installation before doing anything else? Including a proper setup of Timeshift to capture a "fresh install state" (which I thought I did this time and reversion to it does NOT fix this situation).

Read Garuda wiki. Itā€™s all there.
Do not do anything else.
Reboot twice after full pacman updates.
Then change Window decoration theme. Save and reboot.
If the setting is lost, Iā€™ll buy you a beer, or coffee.

I have done the 3rd reinstall. Observations:

  1. Did NOT run any updates right off the bat. Did configuration without anything else first + reboot.

  2. I set the installer to autologin, but this did not work.

  3. I chose to not run the "Setup-Assistant"

  4. I changed the Display Configuration - that worked and stayed (and did previously as well; 2 monitors)

  5. Changed Touchpad settings (invert/natural scrolling + .3 pointer accel)

  6. Networking config opened this time

  7. Changed icons and desktop backgrounds

  8. Set Startup and Shutdown autologin

  9. Rebooted twice for good measure

  10. Saved system vis Timeshift.

  11. Noticed Touchpad settings not saved (lost both the acceleration + inverted scroll).

  12. Opened Konsole and checked for upd it was there this time. Executed it.

  13. Got an error and paused here:

What do you think?

Skip this.

Do this first thing.

Save is already done. What do you think about the upd output in terms of thegaruda-common-settings in local being newer than chaotic-aur and the Pedro Henrique Lara Campos PGP error for apparently whoogle-git error? At that point it essentially seems to fail so...

For the whoogle-git error, my VPS became one of the package builders lately and its PGP key needs to be added to your system. I initially let some people test if its working fine. Your system most likely has chaotic-keyring not updated yet. Try the following:

For the common settings simply do sudo pacman -Suu after updating.

OP, just out of curiosity, which specific ISO did you choose to download and install? I ask because I've trialed a couple of development ISOs that weren't release-ready (and weren't meant for general use).

I'm just throwing that out there as one more thing that should be checked off the troubleshooting list. I apologize if I missed that information somewhere in this lengthy thread.

Why do you ask for advice, being in a series of trouble, and then go and do whatever you like, ignoring the given instructions?
I cannot comprehend this behavior, really!!..
Why should I continue to try help you solve your problem? Give me one reason!

Now you are back in the same situation. No lessons learnt.
Not even things experienced in this topic (roll up the posts to seeā€¦).

Sorry for my Magic Crystal Ball failure!

@petsam I did as instructed, what are you talking about? I'm fine with your not helping, you're the one who volunteered and I was trying to offer you the info requested. Personal choice and agency are wonderful things and I'm not forcing anything upon you. Also, I do not see myself being in the same place but I am indeed baffled at your hostility and seeming misunderstanding.

@dr460nf1r3 thanks, I've done that and that did seem to work. I did get a conflict:

ā•°ā”€Ī» sudo pacman -Suu

:: nohang-git and nohang are in conflict. Remove nohang? [y/N] y

I did notice another issue which seems likely unimportant and saw before:

Failed to write file "/sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy": Operation not permitted
error: command failed to execute correctly

Will see if anything else changes now after this update.

So good news, after using this for the past 45 minutes or so, things seem to have stabilized. There must have been something in the in-built update / upgrade process initially that blew some things up and this time while working through it with a manual update via upd + resolving the signature issue that I noted things seem to be more "sane."

Grateful for the input that led me to this point. Strange it happened as it did the first couple times, but good that we kinda know what happened.

I have now installed Google Chrome + barrier (synergy fork) successfully and moving forward with the system. I do have other questions and oddities that are cropping up, but they appear to be general issues of KDE customization I believe so I'll open up individual posts about these as I move forward.

So to reiterate for anyone that might stumble upon this, the solution appears to have been:

  1. reinstall
  2. save system state with Timeshift
  3. do not run anything except Konsole (Terminal) + upd
  4. work through anything presented there to get a fully updated system + reboot a couple times
  5. make sure settings changes are saved between sessions and so on and you should be good...
