Dkms not required by any package by default

Hello,

I just installed the virtualbox package through Octopi and then uninstalled it (also through Octopi).
During uninstallation, Octopi suggested to uninstall dkms.

I’m not really knowledgeable about all the kernel modules but I think dkms is required for the system and the updates right?
If that the case, maybe something should “require” dkms by default so it is not suggested to uninstall it?

I think it totally depends on what you have installed. I have no free-floating kernel modules on my desktop, however, my server has zfs installed.

To get a list of packages installed as dependencies but no longer required by any installed package, see #Removing unused packages (orphans).
Or use

cleanup

in terminal.

Use only pacman in terminal, not octopi :slight_smile:

Oh okay, I understood that the GPU drivers require kernel modules, which would be built/installed using dkms. For example when the kernel is updated?
But maybe it doesn’t use dkms actually!

You don’t need dkms if you aren’t using any DKMS packages.

pactree -r dkms

There is no garuda-inxi posted so we cannot make any guesses about what specific hardware you have that might use DKMS packages, but commonly DKMS packages are used to allow installing proprietary or out-or-kernel drivers on a non-standard kernel (basically any kernel other than the standard Linux kernel).

For example, if you have Nvidia or Broadcom hardware and want to use the Zen kernel, you can install the kernel headers and use the DKMS versions of the driver packages.
