Desktop environment doesn't seem to start

Hi Linux noob here,

so to preface: working as a developer, never had any experience with linux, not really a hardware or OS-guy, but was always interested in linux. Garuda seemed like a good start.

It’s a fresh install, the 3rd actually. I actually just want to get steam up and running to play with some friends. I already have/had steam installed, the game downloaded and up and running, but had 10FPS. Two things I found out during investigation of the issue:

  • for some reason the “install proprietary drivers” button is not where it’s supposed to be, I only have the “install open source drivers” button

  • I seem to need Nvidia Prime to switch to my dedicated graphics card

The thing is and this is the reason it’s the 3rd install: For some reason, after some time I always run into the same issue, which is that upon reboot my desktop environment doesn’t seem to start. I get no welcome or login screen and get thrown into a blackscreen which only holds my cursor. The only way to get interacting with the system, is to use the quickcorner (up-left by default) to change work spaces, search for terminal and go from there.

I found in a similar post that this command and then starting would help.

systemctl stop sddm

After using it, I get a login screen. Before logging in I need to change the Session from Plasma Wayland to Plasma X11, to get a running environment, which I am currently using to ask for help ._.

The next thing similar threads and posts suggested, was simply updating. But no matter how often I update, for some reason chaotic AUR, seems to find an update every 2 tries or so…

I am kinda at a loss. I hope I could picture everything clearly and didn’t give too much unneeded information. Just acted upon my developer instinct and tried to give as many related Info as I could.

I somehow have a feeling that it has something to do with KDE dragonized, which I am using. After the first reboot, after installing Garuda, it always migrates to the newsest and that’s usually when the first issues start appearing.

Oh yeah, and before I started having blackscreens upon booting, the screen froze from time to time for about 10-30 sec.

Should I maybe just switch to a different desktop environment like gnome and see if the same problems occur?

Seems like its not using the actual graphics driver?

Not sure if helpful: [SOLVED] Update made system use llvmpipe instead of Nvidia / Newbie Corner / Arch Linux Forums

I kinda struggle at the first comment, since /etc/X11/xorg.conf is a directory on my end ^^’

Sorry

I wouldn’t be surprised if its the same issue @Locutus had on the testing ISO

mhwd -l

outputs what for you?

I managed to reset my system to an after install stand, my graphics problem seems to persist, although the booting problem is gone…
Maybe an updated inxi is due, since I fiddled quite a bit to resolve things since making this post:
