Can Only Boot with Nvidia-All drivers (not repo drivers)

As already mentioned, no dGPU in laptops is directly connected to the HDMI port

With the nouveau driver the xorg.0.log is error free.

To get a clean basis and to exclude some possible causes:

Disconect the external TV/monitor.

According to the journal, KDE starts with a restored session. Go to System Settings → Session → Deskop Session and enable “Start with an empty session”.

Disable all autostart entries under System Settings → Autostart.

Set everything to default settings under System Settings → Display & Monitor and disable Adaptive Sync and similar settings.

If you use icc-profile → deactivate. Then check if this file exists: ~/.config/kwinoutputconfig.json - if yes, then delete this file (the bug with the icc-profile should be fixed in plasma/kwin 6.3.1, but you never know).

Then remove these nvidia remnants:

and reboot.

Make sure that linux-zen is the default kernel and install the nvidia drivers:

sudo pacman -S garuda-nvidia-prime-config

(please post the complete output here in the forum).
Reboot → check if there are any issues and then post a current garuda-inxi.

Same freeze after login.

Relevant software: snapper NetworkManager dracut nvidia-dkms
  Windows dual boot: No/Undetected
  Failed units:

The installation runs without errors and your garuda-inxi clearly shows that the nvidia drivers are installed and loaded. In addition, all your logs were error-free…

Can you start a session from the tty?

startplasma-x11

or:

startplasma-wayland

if that doesn’t work, then try this:

dbus-run-session startplasma-wayland

btw:

There is a reason why you should disconnect the external monitor/TV. The point is to exclude everything related to it.

It loads perfectly fine if I unplug the HDMI output.

If I plug it back, then it freezes instantly; but the mouse still works.

There’s another issue I’ve been having for a while, and it continues with the repo driver and internal display.

Sometimes there are visual glitches; even at the login screen, I see occasional glitches. Then when I use the computer, every now and then, X11 freezes, I have to switch to console and kill X11 that takes 100% and I can keep using the computer.

That’s the reason I’m still using X11; under Wayland, the same freeze instead causes a system freeze that cannot be recovered from.

Not sure if related. Probably a separate issue. Looks like driver bugs but I’m surprised it hasn’t been fixed yet.

Booting in Wayland is working now…

but X11 still doesn’t work.

These are just symptoms. HDMI doesn’t work properly for you, wayland doesn’t work properly and x11 doesn’t work at all - the whole graphics system doesn’t work properly.

Now we are one step further.
Upload again a complete journal and a current Xorg.0.log (and if available Xorg.2.log).

Boot a garuda-live.iso with selected proprietary nvidia drivers and check if there are any issues with x11/wayland/HDMI.

Xorg.0.log

Rebooting in Wayland: journalctl

Now for a live boot… that might take some time. We just moved into a new house, got no clue where the USB key is, can be in any box. Will look into it later.

The logs are unremarkable, no indication of nvidia driver issues. The only (graphic) error in the journal in a running wayland session is this:

Feb 24 12:30:20 etienne-pc kwin_wayland[2187]: kwin_wayland_drm: Failed to create framebuffer: Invalid argument
Feb 24 12:30:20 etienne-pc kwin_wayland[2187]: kwin_wayland_drm: Failed to create framebuffer: Invalid argument

The nvidia drivers could possibly be a red herring, it could just as well be a conflict between the nvidia driver and plasma or xserver or a config/rule or whatever.

Do you have an xorg.conf under /etc/X11/ ?

Is the system running stable now without a TV connected or do you still have occasional freezes?

I don’t think the blinking top panel has anything to do with a fallback to the software rendering mode of plasma/qt, but to rule that out please post the complete content of ~/.config/kdeglobals.

/etc/X11/ only contains 2 config files, for keyboard and touchpad. Nothing interesting in there.

I’m running with the TV connected in Wayland. Having unstability issues. Sometimes Wayland restarts, there was that blinking the other day but it didn’t do it again. Sometimes CPU usage goes way up.

Without the TV plugged, I still saw some visual glitch in the login screen so that wasn’t stable either; but haven’t kept using it that way.

I found my USB stick. Downloading the latest ISO version, will be trying that shortly.

Why do I seem to be the only one having such issues with NVIDIA? It’s a pretty common system configuration.

The latest ISO is 240428; same ISO I already had. Didn’t have issues with that live boot, but it’s not updated, and not same versions. So rebooting from that same live boot version won’t give us anything.

That’s good.

Looks good, everything is correct.

I was wondering the same thing with all your help requests. It could be due to a bad BIOS implementation (ACPI etc.). The idea of buying a new laptop is not a bad one.

That’s what I wanted to know. Now try this: garuda-dr460nized-linux-zen-250225.iso
This is a current and up to date dev.iso (I hope it works, I haven’t tested it yet).

Well – been using this laptop for 4.5 years. Loose screen/webcam cable but still functional. I could very well sell it while it still works and buy a new one with 12 months with 0 interests.

I got a “beast CPU” but “budget CPUs” are now twice as fast…

Will try the ISO, downloading it right now.

OK now this is interesting.

garuda-dr460nized-linux-zen-250225.iso
Freezes on black screen before even showing the menu asking for driver version!

garuda-dr460nized-linux-zen-240428.iso
Loads drivers and freezes after Started DBus Interface for snapper.

With Open Source drivers, boots fine.

I remember when nvidia knocked out my HDMI port but then I mostly had the issue where it wouldn’t update properly and the DKMS kernal modules were missing o-o

Yea that’s what I ended up having to do was reinstall Garuda with open source drivers

I can confirm that this is not due to your system. The iso cannot be booted on my Acer laptop (Intel/nVidia) either, immediate black screen after confirming the boot stick in the BIOS boot menu. On an HP laptop (AMD/AMD) with identical BIOS settings, the iso boots without any issues.

The next step after that is to load the drivers via mhwd. If this does not work for you, then it smells strongly of an nvidia issue.

Try this iso (it should work): garuda-dr460nized-gaming-linux-zen-250222.iso
It has a current kernel/nvidia driver. If you also have nvidia issues with this live.iso, then we can very likely rule out that your installation is misconfigured.

To info and to read ( when a wayland session started)

Before running autorandr will check the environment for the WAYLAND_DISPLAY variable to check if the program is running in a Wayland session. This is to avoid issues between usage of xrandr in Wayland environments.

If you need to run autorandr in a Wayland environment, one workaround is to unset the WAYLAND_DISPLAY variable before running the program, such as:

WAYLAND_DISPLAY= autorandr

This works.

Is this a separate test you want me to run? If so could you put more details.

I know, and I agree with you, but that’s not the real cause. I have checked this on my machine, and I have the same error, but my system works without issues. And I know some logs from other users with the same error, and they also have no issues.
What bothers me is this:

Feb 22 10:46:39 etienne-pc autorandr[2568]: Failed to load profile 'default': Profile not found (line 1639)

Do you have any ideas @gampel?

No, during the boot process comes after

the initialization of the drivers via mhwd, and that didn’t work for you.

With this garuda.iso everything works with nvidia drivers in the live environment without issues (x11/wayland/hdmi)?

It booted automatically in X11 with no issue on the HDMI output.
