Can no longer update my system with garuda-update, all USB input stops working

Hi,

The other day I tried garuda-update and afterwards my desktop completely froze. I was able to soft shutdown with my physical power button. At the sddm login screen, I cannot type and my mouse does not work. Tried all USB ports, either USB is dead or sddm is frozen.

I restored a snapshot with Snapper Tools from before the update, and everything returned to normal. Today I tried again, hoping there was some issue that would have been fixed quickly. No such luck, the exact same thing happened. I restored a snapshot again to get my system back.

So, it seems I can no longer update. Here is my garuda-inxi and the list of packages garuda-update wants to install. Maybe someone can tell me if there is something I can exclude in pacman.conf so this doesn’t happen?

I don’t see an error message, do you?

No. There doesn’t seem to be any error when I update. It’s just that as soon as it finishes and says the update was successful, my USB ports are all dead. After a reboot, they are dead again starting at the SDDM login screen. My system is unusable and I have to reboot into a snapshot and restore it… then I’m back to having 269 updates waiting for me, but if I update again the same thing happens.

Are you saying I should go through another update? There won’t be any error messages if I do. I could probably ssh into my machine after, but it’s probably going to be the same info I can gather from it.

I’m guessing this has not happened to anyone else. Not sure what to do other than install 269 packages individually until my USB stops working… but I’d rather not.

Others on Arch and Garuda have reported keyboard & mouse issues at boot, but as yet only downgrading the kernel has been effective at correcting the problem. It is likely you will need to wait for an upstream fix to correct this issue, but as yet a timeline for that is unknown.

Try installing different kernels such as the linux-mainline, linux-lts, or the linux-hardened kernels and then update again to see if the problem still remains on those kernels. The linux-mainline kernel is usually the first to receive upstream fixes, so it might be your best bet.

Be sure to increase your snapshot retention, so that you don’t lose your working snapshots available to roll your system back to.

You could also try using an ancient PS/2 mouse or keyboard if you have a port and the hardware available. I always keep those on hand for situations such as this.

That was a good suggestion but unfortunately my problem seems to have nothing to do with the linux-zen update.

I added linux-* to my package ignore in pacman.conf, but it made no difference. Whatever is causing this seems to be one of the other 260+ packages that gets upgraded.

That’s too many to randomly guess, and aside from the kernel and firmware packages, nothing jumps out at me as a likely culprit… so I guess I’m just screwed.

If anyone else runs into the same issue as me, please let me know.

Maybe not the same, but similar.
I haven’t maintained one of my reference installations for a long time.
I updated about 2.4 GiB with upd. After about 800 MiB, the update was interrupted. I had to repeat the update 5 or 6 times with upd -a --skip mirrorlists until the update was complete.
Before the last update, my output looked something like yours:

After that the update was complete and successful.
So my suggestion would be: ignore the error messages and repeat the updates until they are complete.

Search your logs for any USB related errors.

There’s no error messages. The update installs all packages without issue, but then after it is complete my USB doesn’t work and I can’t use a keyboard or mouse anymore. It’s not an incomplete update.

The reason it shows the list of packages again is because I restored a snapshot before I did the update in order to make my machine usable again.

Can you try unplug USB devices and plug them back in ?

I used to have the same problem from time to time, but I could fix by simply doing that.

Yeah, of course I tried unplugging and plugging into different ports. They’re all dead and stay dead, at least for any keyboards and mice.

Noticed this, also noticed you can turn off and turn all the usb devices back on e.g

sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse

to get the mouse working for instance

The rest I guess you could lsmod and see what you need, the input_core/keyboard etc & probably add a crontab that probably does this after every 5 mins while the issue probably gets fixed.

OK, I get it. Thanks for the clarification.

I posted a service I wrote a few days back for some other users with keyboard & mouse issues at boot. Neither of them tested the service, so I have no idea if it will work for you. Worth a shot, if you feel like giving it a try.

Create the service file named:

/etc/systemd/system/usb-restart.service

With the following contents:

#/etc/systemd/system/usb-restart.service
#sudo systemctl enable usb-restart.service
#sudo systemctl start usb-restart.service
#systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled
#sudo systemctl stop usb-restart.service
#sudo systemctl disable usb-restart.service
#systemctl status usb-restart.service
#sudo systemctl daemon-reload

[Unit]
Description=Restart USB
Before=display-manager.service
StopWhenUnneeded=yes

[Service]
Type=oneshot
RemainAfterExit=yes
ExecStart=/usr/bin/sudo -E  /usr/local/bin/restart_usb.sh

[Install]
WantedBy=display-manager.service

Create the script named:

/usr/local/bin/restart_usb.sh

With the following contents:

#!/bin/bash
#the keyboard section below is commented until the correct driver is confimed
#modprobe -r atkbd
#modprobe atkbd reset=1

#Disable all USB devices
#/usr/local/bin/restart_usb.sh
set -euo pipefail
IFS=$'\n\t'

VENDOR="****"
PRODUCT="****"

for DIR in $(find /sys/bus/usb/devices/ -maxdepth 1 -type l); do
  if [[ -f $DIR/idVendor && -f $DIR/idProduct &&
        $(cat $DIR/idVendor) == $VENDOR && $(cat $DIR/idProduct) == $PRODUCT ]]; then
    echo 0 > $DIR/authorized
    sleep 1
    echo 1 > $DIR/authorized
  fi
done

Make the above script executable.

The keyboard section of the script is commented until the correct driver is confirmed:

#modprobe -r atkbd
#modprobe atkbd reset=1

Check that you are using the atkbd keyboard module before uncommenting those lines.

I wrote and used this service quite a few years back, but the USB reset part of the service should still work fine. Test the service as is, then experiment with the keyboard reset section.

After an annoying amount of time isolating and manually upgrading packages, I finally figured out which package is the problem:

xf86-input-libinput-1.5.0-1

I have fully upgraded my system now, skipping this package. If I install it, USB is completely broken and my system is unusable again.

I added it to my pacman.conf ignore list for now, but this doesn’t seem good.
