You were running Windows Vista in 2016?!
Not everyone can buy a new computer every year. I still use a old Toshiba 11 years old with no issues, not really all that much difference to my new Lenovo.
Ha, you whippersnappers!!! Back in the day we used to have to hope there was enough waterflow in the crick to power the dynamo. Otherwise we had to use a modded bike with a genny attached to charge some batteries so we didn't have to use coal oil lamps for light. Before that we had to risk death from a thousand stings to collect enough wax to make candles.
And kids these days think they have it tough.
I am 39. I started trying Linux in 2007 when Windows vista came out so 24. Most of my computer usage prior to buying my own computer at 20 was at school, the library, or other people's houses, so I didn't get to tinker much with them until then.
Well let's see...
Age: Not as old as Cooter (sorry, drink again across-the-fence neighbor)
OK, Fine
1965 birth year (57 this year, for any common core US Education system students)
- First computer was a Commodore 128 with Basic 7
- Deleted the OS on work computer using DOS, NCOIC saved me with a recovery disk, and I went into debt to buy a XT/8086 personal computer
- On overseas deployment (US Army) in Korea our Computer Programmer was going on leave and I volunteered to run backups on a UNIX system
- When I returned to the states I was suffering from withdrawals and a magazine had a Slackware disk which I promptly dual booted somehow...LILO was it? (1995-6-7)
- Eventually VMware then Virtualbox allowed me to run Linux and use a VM with WDoze to connect to work, and as they say the rest is history!
Edit: Sorry to those that got this in Silliness, it was supposed to be here...(tbg,tillidie)
Real life age is 34
Started using computers when I was 2 years old. Thats right I grew up with Wordstar, Windows 9x and Netscape.
Started using Linux from age 14, still started with a box set of Suse 7.2 Professional. Good old Gnome 2x and KDE 3 days.
Then moved between the usuals, Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat (before Fedora days). Then took a breather and went back to Windows 10. Moved to 11 and after I got the Edge prompt went thats it. Back to my love and back to Arch based.
I was running XP in 2018. No forced updates updates, PC was fast and didn’t slow over time despite running on HDD, I had no antivirus installed to slow down it, Chrome told XP was unsupported but who cares etc. XP did the job. And weirdly, I didn’t get hacked. Then I got a new PC with W10 on it. It was dreadfully slow and W10 UI was very flat. And 2 years later I discovered Linux and here I am.
Where I originated, Western-by-God-Kansas, “across the fence neighbors” were sometimes more important than friends or relatives. In survival situations–blizzards, blinding dust storms–you leaned on them and they leaned on you. It was the same way in Alaska. If your neighbor–near or far–needed help, you did what you could do. It might be you next.
Tragedy strikes, and humanity huddles together. War is the same. There are no atheists or enemies in foxholes–or swimming holes.
I'm going to go a bit off-topic here : I just wanted to say (and I wanted to for a long time) that I really love the way you describe your places and stories
. Maybe it's because not being a native speaker I like to learn some new expressions every now and then? Or maybe because I really feel like I'm reading a book!
you mean American slang not even English its so comical i have to smile
They also, a little later, changed (well, censored) the picture (in Europe, at least)…
They changed the leather vest to a metal one, which happened also hide the nipple
But I remember that, I just turned 49
When I first tried Linux… Hmmm, cannot say exactly… My first computer was Mattel Aquarius, then Oric Atmos and Spectrum.
Anyway, it must have been about at the time, when UT (or UT2003 or 2004) came out. I remember the fight I had, to get 3D-card (some Ati) to work with Linux… I did it, though.
After that, I tried some Linux distro for a few years. Once a year, to see if it would work “better”… Then I lost interest, until Garuda and news about Linux started to interest me again.
And so, I’m still here
When I grow up I want to be a writer.
Me too, when I become young...
With or without a cigarette (smoke nicotine)?
The other stuff in biscuits or muffins ?
Someone knows me too well.
May 1st will be 6 mos. no cigs.
Jeah, I was missing your statistic about
Your doing well you young whipper-snapper
The smart people have either already quit or never started.
11 months for me without.
... and yes, I'm still cranky.
