Accents not working

Hello, I use an US keyboard, but I write also in portuguese, so i need to use acents, and currently I'm not able to write accents anywhere but on firefox, eg: é
If i try it on kate, or anywhere else on the system i get no accent, how can i fix it?
the layout i'm using on system settings is set to en us alt intl
